When I switch on PC I get to the desktop in approx. 50-55seconds.
I then have to wait about a minute or so for the Internet icon in system tray to show internet access.
Why does it take so long?
Is it possible to speed this up?

I highly suggest that you run a checkdisk on your machine. There are some errors that indicate that you need to do so ASAP.

You may want to run this overnight, as it may take a long time to run. If checkdisk seems to stall, just allow it to run. This scan may take several hours. After running the check disk, please let me know how things are with your machine.

Run chkdsk /f /r from elevated command prompt.

@roger hawke see if this helps on getting the Check Disk info.

Here is one way that you can pull the log for CHKDSK to view it. You can also COPY and PASTE the contents from the TXT file into a post.

1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog, type powershell.exe, and press Enter.

2. In PowerShell, copy and paste the command below, and press Enter.

get-winevent -FilterHashTable @{logname="Application"; id="1001"}| ?{$_.providername –match "wininit"} | fl timecreated, message | out-file Desktop\CHKDSKResults.txt

3. CHKDSKResults.txt file will be created on your desktop, that is the log file of your chkdsk scan results from Event Viewer.

If you are to grab the log with rusty instructions then that will do. Just let me know how things are after running it, then we will tackle reducing your start up load and removing useless programs.

I get to the desktop in approx. 50-55seconds.
That doesn't seem too bad. I just timed my netbook - 68 seconds to see the desktop. (Win Home Prem. 64 bit 4GB RAM)
I'm sure my desktop computer and my husband's netbook take longer than this.

If you want fast, don't run Windows. Run ChromeOS (chromebook), android (tablets and phones) or install linux.

I then have to wait about a minute or so for the Internet icon in system tray to show internet access.
Mine takes more than a minute.[/quote] Mine takes at least a minute.

I turn my computer on then go heat up coffee. by the time I come back, the computer is ready to go.

Hello Roger, looking at your earlier uploaded logs you certainly have some junk we can remove to help your machine function better. Can you please follow these instructions and get us 2 more logs please? BTW your Windows is 64bit if you are unsure.

Please download the FRST 32 bit or FRST 64bit version to suit your operating system. It is important FRST is downloaded to your desktop.

If you are unsure if your operating system is 32 or 64 Bit please go HERE.

Once downloaded right click the FRST desktop icon and select "Run as administrator" from the menu"

If you receive any security warnings, or the User Account Control warning opens at any time whilst using FRST you can safely allow FRST to proceed.
Frst will open with two dialogue boxes, accept the disclaimer.

  1. Accept the default whitelist options,
  2. If the additions.txt options box is not checked please select it.
  3. Then select "Scan"

Frst will take a few minutes to scan your computer, and when finished will produce two log files on your desktop, FRST.txt, and Addition.txt. They will display immediately on the desktop, but can be reopened later as a notepad file.

Please COPY and PASTE the contents of these two files in your next post.:)

Thank you Roger, whilst I go through your logs can I ask is AVG a free or paid for version?

Also would recommend you remove SuperAntiSpyware, please follow the instructions below.

Please go HERE and download Geek Uninstaller portable and save it to somewhere you can find later. Now use you favorite Unzip application to extract the zipped file from the download. This should create a new folder that contains a Geek.exe file which you can now double left click to open the program.

Optionally you can create a desktop shortcut by right clicking the Geek.exe file and choose "Send to" from the drop down menu. This will give you a shortcut icon on the desktop for future use of this handy application.

You can safely ignore any security pop ups that may appear before the program opens.

Either way you open it once Geek Uninstaller is running select the program you wish to uninstall by right clicking it and then choose "Uninstall" from the drop down menu.

Follow and accept all uninstall options once the uninstaller begins.

It is recommended when removing any Antivirus/Security program, or if you have errors or difficulty removing any program to use "Force removal" to uninstall the program.

Should you have any further difficulty removing any items please ask us for help:)

Gus,
I am using the free version of AVG.
Can you suggest good alternative to SuperAntiSpyware?
Anything else to do?
Have not done anything yet.

Roger I am analysing your logs and preparing a fix for you. In the meantime can you use SuperAntiSpyware and AVG. After using Geek uninstaller above to remove both, please go HERE and download and use the AVG removal tool. This will remove some more stuff any uninstaller will leave behind.

Once the VERY ordinary and bloated AV tools are removed please consider one of the below free, and more effective security apps. Recommend you install one of your choice. Once we get your PC tidy we can discuss security further. It appears you have used several AV/security apps before and you should remember NEVER to use two realtime security apps at the same time.

Bitdefender. HERE
Avira. HERE
Avast. HERE
360 Total Security. HERE

So once you have removed AVG using both Geek uninstaller and the AVG removal tool linked above, and SuperAntiSpyware, please use these tools to see what else emerges.

We will need a log from AdwCleaner for further information.

Please download a copy of AdwCleaner from HERE, it is important to download it to your desktop.

Once downloaded to the desktop AdwCleaner will create an icon

Should you receive any security warnings or your User Account Control warning appears whilst you are using this application you can safely allow AdwCleaner to continue.

Before running AdwCleaner please ensure all other programs and browsers are closed, then double left click the icon to open it.

AdwCleaner will open, click the scan button to start searching.

The scan may take some time to complete, and when it has any malware found will be automatically selected for quarantining. Click the "Clean" button.

After a few seconds a message should tell you your computer will now reboot. Allow the reboot.

When the computer restarts a log file will be displayed, but if its closed for any reason before copying the contents, you will find a copy of the file if you navigate to C:\AdwCleaner[C#].txt (The C denotes the Cleaning log)

Please Copy and Paste the contents of the log file with your next reply.

We now need to run Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) on your computer, please go HERE and download it to your DESKTOP.
Before running JRT ensure your antivirus, and any other security software is disabled, if you are unsure how to do this please ask. Also close browsers and other applications before running this tool.
Should you receive any User Account Control (UAC) alert warning when starting JRT you can safely allow it.

Right click the JRT desktop icon
and select "run as administrator" from the menu, for XP users just double click the icon. JRT will open with a simple interface, and ask to press any keyboard key to continue. Please do so.

Depending on the amount of data on your computer JRT may take some time to complete the scan. When JRT finishes a .txt file will be saved and displayed on your desktop, please COPY and PASTE the contents of this file in your next post:)

Your next post should contain.
  1. Info if you uninstalled AVG and SuperAntiSpyware.
  2. What is your newly installed AV.
  3. AdwCleaner log.
  4. JRT log.

Gus,
I had already uninstalled AVG and SuperAnti Spyware as per your instructions.
Have installed Bitdefender, and disabled it before I ran JRT.
Please see attached logs as requested. (AdwCleaner and JRT)
Hope this is OK.
