ok looked like a flat telephone cable not a netwok cable.
Last thing I can think of to try
Go back to adapter settings and set both back to obtain ip address and obtain dns.
      then go to device manager
Right click on Realtek pcie 2.5gbe family controller
      left click on uninstall device
      Reboot
      It should reinstall automattically
If not it then starts to look like hardware or malware.
Do yo need step by step instructions?

It did reinstall automatically, but I don’t have Internet.
Is it possible I’ve got out of date drivers somewhere?

I know you said you plugged the white cable into the laptop and it worked.
Is there any writing on the cable saying that it is Cat 5 or 5e Or 6 etc?
Is the black cable from room mate able to be used for a test?
I doubt driver as the device manager shows driver ok.

It says its Cat 7 Flat Cable ROHS. And yeah, I’ll see if I can get it to stretch that far?

Cat 5E. And it doesn’t seem to have helped, still nothing on the Internet end

Green light on the router, same solid orange, flickering green as before on the computer.
Ping this time gives β€œtransmit failed. general failure.” probably the cable’s fault

Normally bad driver will show in device manager
                        You could try this
Will need usb to transfer from laptop to desktop
                        Realtek RTL8125 LAN driver V1125.9.614.2022 For Windows 11 64-bit.

(Went back to the white cable) It claimed a success on flushing the DNS, but the ping has been coming back as transmit failed since I first swapped to the black cable. No change after flush dns.
