We made the ip address 192.168.10.175
    it is showing 192.168.10.73 ???.
    Leave it for now.
    Let’s try backwards
    on the laptop
    open cmd
    ping 192.168.10.73
    press enter
    what happens.
Are you running any anti virus software on the desktop?

Not running actively, but I have scanned it for malware? Nothing came up.

Here’s what that ping got on the laptop.

        on the desktop
        open cmd
        Type in
        netsh winsock reset
        press enter
        it should show
        Successfully reset the Winsock Catalog.
You must restart the computer in order to complete the reset.

Also, I think the Windows Network Diagnostics tool reset the manual network connection to automatic

When you plug the cable into the desktop do you have a light on the desktop side and the router side?

                  MalwareBytes?

I did that, it did say successfully reset. Still no Internet after restarting.

I get a green light on the router end that correlates to the Ethernet port I plugged it into on there. On the computer end, I have a solid, larger orange light and a flickering green light

Do you know how to disable the firewall on the desktop
                        or do you need instructions
Are you using windows defender or do you have nortons or Mcaffee etc installed

Only the windows security anti-virus, I think? I just ran a Quick Scan with that and it found no threats.

I am not to concerned with threats just yet.
Do you need instructions to disable firewall on desktop?

                                Can you turn them off?
                                If not
                                Control panel
                                Windows defender firewall
                                Left hand side turn off
Then try ping again from laptop
                                ping 192.168.10.73
