should I interrupt it? looks like almost 1 hour and 40 min, timer is slowly counting down

Are you sure it was cmd R
internet recovery is ok it just takes a while.
You can try again or wait it out.
If you try again and end up in the same place it will start from 0 again.
CMD R should be local recovery
CMD Shift R is internet recovery.
Is it still clicking.

pretty sure command R, but it was weird, almost like the power button didn’t want to shut down. then screen was blank, but I wonder if it was command R from a point of not completely shut down?
I was going to just leave it, time is jumping around just a little but at 1:10 now
still a metronomic click most the time

If you think might be ok I was going to step away for a bit and let it go

The only concern is the click. Not much you can do about it.
Are you plugged into the internet via cable.
You may as well let it run.

no cable, that would have been hard to do in my current state
no clicking now, comes and goes. I assume a hard drive doing important things?

So now pick disk utility
Go back to Disk Utility, select your startup disk, and click File > Enable Journaling from the menu bar.
After that, you should be able to reinstall macOS.

Which one do I pick on left? Disk1 or Mac or x base system?
Am I in right spot?

I am surprised it is not showing as Macintosh HD

Can you click on disk 1 and click on first aid?
