Solved Can download some programs but then unable to install them

I suspect you keep trying to download the IE one and not the FF one.

Grab it from this link for non-IE browsers, except Chrome

That plugin seemed to do the trick. I was able to install flash player and all looked good until a notice came up saying "Adobe Flash Player 24.0 r0 has stopped working"


That was yesterday & I was going to attach the notice with a "view problem details" panel. I did a screenshot, cropped and saved as a jpg but for some reason I cannot attach it, in fact I can't attach even a short txt file - I click 'Upload a File', select the file, click 'open' the file name appears & the 'progress bar' which stays at 0% then all disappears. Never had that problem before and attached the 'progs.jpg' file just a few minutes before - #35. rebooted PC but still can't attach a file....

I reinstalled Flash today and the notice has not reappeared. How do I test if Flash is now actually working?
 
Sorry I'm being so slow following up on all your suggestions. I have to prepare, complete and submit Company Accounts to HMRC (IRS equiv) by tomorrow and that's taking all my time! But I really do appreciate your help and I will follow up after that!

As Gus says there are issues with your Winsock lets start out by replacing them. :)

Download Winsock.reg and WinSock2.reg below.
Save them both to your desktop.
Right click them one at a time and select merge.

Then from an elevated command prompt copy and paste the commands below one at a time hitting enter after each.
Hit the start button.
Type CMD.
Right click the icon that appears.
Select run as administrator.



Reg: reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\IPSec\Policy\Local /f
Reg: reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\IPSec\Policy\Local /f
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
netsh int ipv4 reset
shutdown -r

After the machine has rebooted, we really need to set a static ip on your machine. This way you get a permanent lease and do not have to deal with disconnections. You may notice it, you may not. But if this happens during a download whatever you download may end up being corrupted and not work.

Hit the start button type ncpa.cpl

Right Click your connection, then select properties,

Select Internet Protocol Version 4, then Properties.

Set your Default GateWay To: Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
Set your IP Address To : IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.125
Set your Subnet Mask To: Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Set your Primary DNS To: ............. : 8.8.8.8
Set your Alternate DNS To: ............. : 8.8.4.4

Now we should reset FireFox and Internet Explorer to default settings. This tool will save all your bookmarks and passwords. :)


Download ResetBrowser To your desktop.
Now close all open browsers.
Right click and run as administrator.

Click on Reset Firefox-- Allow completion.
Complete the same for internet explorer.
Now reboot your machine.
Tell me if you are able to download proper now. :)

Yes, looks like it. Just downloaded and successfully installed Whatsapp, so looks as if that problem sorted.

Very many thanks for all the help on getting that sorted.

I downloaded Winsock.reg and Winsock2.reg and completed CMD commands but as downloads now installing OK I haven't gone on to set a static ip - on the basis that as the issue I had has been resolved it may be best as it is - or should I carry on and set the static ip?

BTW would be grateful if someone can tell me which of those programs listed on post #35 attachment can be deleted without causing problems.

Sorry! Thought I'd replied to that! I don't have the original Vista install disk, or any of the original disks, so really would have to delete progs via Control Panel or Revo etc. I just wondered about all those Microsoft ones and whether recent updates have rendered any of the older ones unnecessary.
