This is an odd issue. I'm not really sure what is causing it, but I do know what is fixing it, and I know what the problem is. So, I guess I will start there...

I use an HP Omen laptop for gaming on my TV in my bedroom. The laptop has Win 11, 32 GB RAM, 13th gen i7, and an RTX 4070. I have this laptop hooked up to a Roku TV with an HDMI cable, and have been using it like this with no problem for a good amount of time. Very recently I tried to start up a new game I had bought on Steam and I was automatically met with problems. I would either get an Unreal Engine error submission screen, or I would hear the music to the game along with my cursor changing to that of the game. Also, I would still see the steam page/desktop on my screen but could not click on anything. It was as if the game was open but the window was see-through.

Now on to how I am able to fix it. After messing with this thing for an hour or so while it was still hooked up via the HDMI cable I got frustrated and unplugged everything to just use the laptop directly. As soon as I did that everything worked. My initial thinking was that something was wrong with either the HDMI cable or the HDMI port, but when I plugged the cable back in, everything worked again like normal. I don't think it has anything to do with the port though because I can do everything, other than gaming, while it is connected to the TV. So, I ordered a new HDMI cable. I replaced it but am still having the same problem. When this issue occurs, I find all I have to do is open my laptop lid, disconnect the cable, plug the cable back in, and then everything works again for 24-48 hours (give or take). Sometimes I only have to open the lid, but that is rare. Usually I have to do all of the things I mentioned.

I'm at my wits end with this thing and am hoping someone here has some idea as to what is happening....

Perhaps windows updated your graphics card driver, and the issue is there....

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Had a busy few days.

When I try to run that I get an error message saying "An error occurred: Could not find a part of the path C:\Users\md198\Desktop\PCHF.txt". At first it was being removed because it was being flagged as a virus. I'm assuming because it is unsigned or something. I don't know what to do from here though. If you can let me know I will gladly post the txt file.

Seems like defender does not like it. Yeah it is unsigned, I made the tool.
You could disable Defender and download and run again, or ...

Let’s see what’s going on, with the settings.

Please download MiniToolBox and save it to your desktop.
Run the program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as administrator.
When the program opens check mark Select All Then hit GO
Please post the log in your next reply. Attach or copy and paste, whatever is easier for you.

Speccy Scan.

  • Please go here and download Speccy.
  • Install and run the program.
  • Upon Completion:
  • Hit File
  • Publish Snap Shot
  • A link will appear, post that link.

I'm not really sure what this driver is but after attempting to run your tool again after making sure defender was disabled, and downloading speccy, I received an error on my laptop saying "Driver cpuz149_64.sys A security setting is detecting this as a vulnerable driver and blocking it from loading. You will need to adjust your settings to load this driver" I looked into it and found it had to do with monitoring software so I am guessing it has to do with speccy? I did install speccy originally from the button in the PCHFLogTool originally but it said it was outdated so I installed the updated version. Maybe it had something to do with that. Just thought I would mention it in case it had something to do with this.

Anyway, here are the items you requested.

Just another little tidbit of info on this problem...

It seems to happen every time I restart my computer. As long as the laptop stays on, after getting it to work properly, it never gives the error. As soon as the thing is shut down, or restarted, I start having the problem again.

Seems like a lot to go thru, but it should take you less than 10 minutes, this is everything that I seen wrong with your machine. Go thru the steps, should help with the issue you face and give the machine a little boost.

Use GeekUninstaller remove the following:

HP Documentation
McAfee
Mozilla Maintenance Service
WebAdvisor by McAfee

Clean install your graphics card driver:

This will prevent windows update from installing drivers when you reboot.

  • Open Notepad.
  • Copy the code below, do not copy the word code.
  • Paste into open notepad.
  • Save to desktop as 456.reg
  • Right click 456.reg and select merge.
  • Reboot the computer for changes to take effect.

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]
"ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DriverSearching]
"SearchOrderConfig"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UpdatePolicy\PolicyState]
"ExcludeWUDrivers"=dword:00000001

Download and install DDU
Boot Into Safe Mode.
Remove the Display drivers, with DDU
Reboot back into normal mode.
Reinstall and uncheck everything except the driver.
With the Nvidia Clean install tool.

When you reboot after removing a driver windows will auto install, the steps above should null that.

Open Elevated command prompt and copy the code below.
Paste into Command window and hit enter.

Code:
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost > C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
echo ::1 localhost >> C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

If you do not use Edge then>>>EdgeBlock

O&O Shutup Ten
Move it to your documents folder.
Right click run as admin.
Go to actions, apply all settings.
Create the restore point when prompted.
Follow thru the prompts, and reboot if needed to apply the settings.

GeekUninstaller >View Microsoft Store Apps -- Remove anything you do not use, including one drive and Cortana.

To Clean Temp Files>>>>System Ninja

Open Powershell as admin:
Type or copy and paste:

irm christitus.com/win | iex

Hit enter.

Under Tweaks tab:

Check the following:

  • Create restore point.
  • DeleteTempFiles
  • Disable Consumer Features
  • Disable Telemtry
  • Disable Hibernation
  • Disable Homegroup
  • Perfer IPV4 over IPV6
  • Disable location tracking
  • Set Services to manual
  • Disable Wifi Sense
  • Disable Storage Sense

Ok, just finished doing everything you outlined in your last post. Unfortunately the problem persists. I think something is happening when if the computer is restarted while the lid stays closed. If I restart the laptop when it is open everything still works, but if it is hooked up to my tv and I restart it with the lid closed the error occurs. I don't really know what this means, but that is what creates the problem 100% of the time.

P.S.
I really like a some of the tools you provided in your last post (GeekUninstaller is amazing). So, if nothing else, really glad I know about those!

Hit the windows key and R at the same time and type devmgmt.msc into the run box,
Left click display adapters and then right click and disable Microsoft Basic display adapter.

Also disable Hybernation:
Elevated command prompt: >>>>>>>>> powercfg.exe /hibernate off

Reboot and test.

Device Manager doesn't show a "Microsoft Basic display adapter". The only adapters in there are

1) Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe Graphics
2) NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU

I did disable hibernation though and tried it but I am still getting the error.

Also, I just found out something we did blocked PhoneLink. I use this quite often. How to I get access to this again? I looked through the things we blocked and I am not seeing it but when I open it I get an error that says, "This feature has been blocked by your system administrator". It must be something that was done yesterday when I was going through the steps you lined out. Just not sure what to do to fix it.

Check the settings in O&O shut up ten for the phonelink issue.

Right click and disable the intel display.

Ok, figured out the Phone Link issue and it is fixed, and disabling the intel graphics fixed the main issue. Is it ok to run the computer with the integrated graphics disabled?

Also, I just wanted to say thank you. I have always been in awe of you guys that help random people like me on the internet. It's much appreciated. Thank you!v

Yes, there is no need for two graphics card drivers running, the first one is to get you going when you install, and it’s there in case the main graphics fail.

Yeah some people have crossword puzzles they do, some things for others. Coming here and helping is sort of a hobby.

I’ll mark solved. 👍

Well, I will consider myself lucky you have such a helpful hobby. So, again, thank you 👍

Just out of curiosity, I have had several laptops that had both integrated and dedicated graphics cards but I have never had an issue like this. Do you have any thoughts on why this laptop is all the sudden having this conflict?

Likely windows update. But, since you followed the instructions, windows will only be installing security patches for your machine, and won’t be installing drivers anymore. 👌
