There is a wifi tab and going into it it’s turned on. If I click on “Show available networks” I get “No Wifi networks found”.
Yet you can print via wireless to two printers, odd :unsure:
Last software check we can do, uninstall anything that we have used as you see fit;
Post an Autoruns log for us, see here we are looking for anything that could be blocking the wireless connection, an orphaned AV driver etc;
1: Extract the Autoruns Zip file contents to a folder.
2: Double-click the “Autoruns.exe”.
3: Click on the "Hide Signed Microsoft and Windows Entries” option.
4: Go to File then to Export As or Save in some versions.
5: Save AutoRuns.txt file to known location like your Desktop > when you click on File > Save you will then get the option to Save as type, click the drop down tab, change it to Text and then click the Save button.

No worries, just deleted the first one as it was not what we needed.
Nothing untoward in Autoruns, the BT and Wireless drivers are there and there is nothing that is blocking the connection to the router, this suggests a hardware issue, not with your computers NIC device but with the actual router.
Have you tried a hard reset of the router.
Can you post the brand and model name or number of the router for us so we can do some research.
Yes, I did try it several times as that’s one of the prompts from windows troubleshoot.
It might also be worth mentioning that my phone and tablet connect to the router without issue. They also pick up 10 other wireless networks within range, like the desktop used to do. Now it doesn’t find a single one…
The router is what the cable company provides, says in the back it is a Hitron Technologies cve-30360 ZON.
What about a reboot of the router and first time set up.

I wish that you had mentioned this sooner
Is there anything that could be interfering with the NICs signal, cordless telephone, microwave oven etc, how far away is the computer from the wireless router.
it would appear that this is a common HP problem with not much help from them when looking at threads around various forums.
The acid test for the computers NIC device would be to try connecting to a wireless network somewhere else, a pain in the proverbial to do with a desktop and that is why it has been left until last to do it, that and trying a clean install of Windows is about as much as I have left I`m afraid.
What is a first time set up? A reset to factory settings? I would rather not try this, the company doesn’t share easily setting and passwords as they don’t want us messing with their devices.
The desktop is little more than a meter away with a clear line of sight. There is nothing with radio signals near it, even the power strips are about a meter away.
I did try connecting it in a different location already… I’ve rearranged the room after the problem started and the desktop is now on a different location (other side of a 5 or 6 meter long room - all this before posting here). Behaviour is the same before and after.
I also tried connecting it to my phone’s 4g hotspot… it just doesn’t see any networks…
Do you reckon changing the adaptor would solve this issue? Or would I just run against the same upstream issue?
Understand your reluctance to change anything but fwiw see info here
Btw, what company devices would you be messing with?

I meant somewhere like a family member or friends home where there is a wireless router you could try connecting to.
Do you happen to know anyone that has a wireless USB adaptor that you could borrow, with those you just pop them into a USB 2.0 port at the back of the computer and then forget about them.
Oh I meant the router. It is provided by internet/cable company and they assume it’s their stuff, you are just using it, it’s not exactly your property. AFAIK it’s very difficult (a lot say impossible) to ditch their router for a new one because they don’t tell you Vlans etc. There’re long discussions about this in national forums and I don’t know enough to tell you if they are right, I just know that I don’t know enough to mess with it
Different house or a USB adapter… that is going to be challenging, especially the latter. I won’t be able to try that any time soon with this coronavirus business going on. I’m a health professional and I have to work some late shifts, people I know are also health professionals doing their own shifts at different times…
That is typical behaviour of what we have here in the UK, we have to use routers provided by the ISP but are free to change passwords, you are right to stick with what you are comfortable with and not change passwords etc.
Thank you! So I was looking at wifi adaptors and it just occurred to me that mine has no antennas attached to it. I remember getting it to one of those repair caffes for some other thing and the guy going “why is there an earth wire here?” and ripping a wire out. I also remember the round end bits on it and at the time I didn’t know what that was.
This would explain why there is no errors with the adaptor but no signal. The thing is, how would I replace this part? Are they sold separatly and what would they be called?
Also, some Amazon seller states they need to be soldered in and that’s something I would have to look up on youtube on how to do.
The wireless/BT device in your computer does not have any antennas according to the specs here
The device is the M2 type that slots into the MB, see MB specs here note the M2 wireless lan (key A) slot, bottom left above the PCI-E slot.
If your computer is still printing using a wireless connection it proves that the wireless device is working, you could remove this device and fit your own PCI-E X1 type.
