There is another black box in the surge protector hooked into the cox cable router if thats the power supply. I cant see any writing on it but its quite a few years old.

We are moving forward - congrats!

Let’s get another Speccy report and check the McAfee status.
And remove those items mentioned in post #23.

The power supply is inside the case, the outside stuff is power to the PC, the inside power supply is the power to the electronics. This would be good to know what it is, as an old, or poor model, or faulty unit may explain your issues. But if you can’t, that’s fine. Same for the memory.

The process we are trying to follow at the moment is to get to machine to a normal state (as much as possible) - that is, all the low hanging fruit which stands out can be addressed in the hopes it may be the root cause.
And if it proves not to be, we have at least eliminated the obvious.

Having two sticks of memory of different types is know to cause some issues and should be avoided if possible.
Your two may be similar enough, but they aren’t identical.
It will only be after one is removed that we’ll know if they are an issue.

Try the above and run the PC for a couple of days.
Have the lock ups still been occurring, and if so, how often?

Im not paying anything for macafee, it was on the comp when it was set up and another person here helped me to get rid of it right after we set up the comp. Peter Oz helped me 5 hours that night setting it up because right at the start there was no place to hook it up to cox cable. He told me to hit F10 and then gave me a bunch of instructions after that. He was great. I had to keep unplugging the new comp from the modem and plugging back in the old comp so he could tell me what to do. I dont think the old comp will work anymore though.

Macafee just doesnt want to leave me.

I think i have done something to the computer. Where it says get the latest updates as soon as they are available it was set on off so i turned it back to on. Should i do that? Also somehow it is saying updates are paused 1 week till 12/12/2024. Is that what it should say? If i click the pause update arrow it just goes to extend for 1 week, 2 weeks 3 weeks. I cant end the pause so i guess it will last till 12/12. The update im doing now i had to do manually because i saw the update thing was showing an update down in the bottom right but it wasnt updating like normal when i do a restart or turn off the comp.

Getting the latest updates is up to you, I have mine enabled.
Microsoft’s theory behind offering that option is for those you don’t want to get the latest, potentially not thoroughly tested, updates.
Disabling that option means by the time you are eligible to install that update, about a month has past and if the update was flaky, there may have been a fix for it by the time you go to install it.

As to the pausing of updates, it is really saying β€œclick here to pause for one week?”.
They haven’t been paused yet as shown by that current update being downloaded.

As to the pausing of updates, it is really saying β€œclick here to pause for one week?”.
They haven’t been paused yet as shown by that current update being downloaded.
It is already paused for one week. I didnt do it though. I was clicking around to change it and one of the clicks came up with the thing saying its paused till 12/12/2024. I havent done num 2 yet but i did uninstall wild tangent games and thats when i got the message on my hpone with the micro-soft acct verification code. Do you recommend leaving the get latest updates thing on or off? If it was set on off all the time why was i getting updates all the time and they would automatically update doing a restart or when i turned off the comp?

Microsoft’s theory behind offering that option is for those you don’t want to get the latest, potentially not thoroughly tested, updates.
Disabling that option means by the time you are eligible to install that update, about a month has past and if the update was flaky, there may have been a fix for it by the time you go to install it.

I saw the circle thing saying there was an update in the bottom right. Normally i would restart and the update happens. But not this time. I had to click check for updates then when it found the update i had to click install. Never had to do that before.

My recommendation would be to turn that feature on, get the latest updates as soon as they are available.

As to the pause issue, click Pause for 1 week, you’ll see it change to Extend for 1 week and up the top, you’ll see Resume Updates.
Click that and it’ll check for updates and reset the pause back to Pause for 1 week.
Again, it hasn’t actually paused anything, just asking if you would like to - so don’t press it again.
