DisplayPort adapted to HDMI works but arggh, NO audio!

I got a new monitor that takes VGA and HDMI. My PC has VGA and it has DisplayPort (call it DP). The DP is a so-called “dual-mode” variety as evidenced by the double plus-sign insignia stamped thereat. So it should convert to an HDMI using a cheap passive adapter.

I bought the cheap adapter and now I can successfully connect to my new monitor via HDMI cable, no doubts about it. But no audio is coming through. The only audio device shown on my Sound control panel is the standard adapter for stereo 3.5mm jack, one in the back of my machine and one in the front to accommodate headphones.

Now I want to switch sound output to the DP obviously and I find no way to do this. I haven’t yet been able to get into BIOS but I have no real reason to believe that the solution lies therein. I don’t know where the solution lies

The monitor’s settings are definitely set to receive audio via the HDMI input and speakers are enabled and volume is set at non-zero so I cannot imagine what else I could possibly do to enable/activate the desired audio coming through my DP to my monitor’s speakers. Open your device manager uninstall your audio drivers and reboot. Make sure the hdmi cable is hooked up when you do this. I’ve had the same issue in the past and this solved it for me.

Just so you know, when you uninstall certain windows drivers and then reboot; windows will automatically reinstall the driver. I am thinking that the audio driver will reload with the correct settings for your tv output.

Ok I tried that and nothing changed. At first I just uninstalled my audio from Device Mgr under the category “Audio Input and Output” and then I did a Restart. It never gave me the option to “uninstall device driver also” though I had seen that option before for other things. But when I restarted the PC, my browser window came back up, like uninterrupted, which I had never experienced before. Maybe that is a feature added in some behind-the-scenes W10 update. So I went back and uninstalled the device from each of TWO categories, the second being that, you know, Sound, Video and whatnot devices, because it appeared within both categories. Then I did a full Shutdown instead of Restart. Then I removed my VGA cable and my speaker jack (thus leaving the DP-to-HDMI as the sole candidate) and then booted my PC. Nothing! Exactly the same as before.

There is only the one device on the roster and Device Mgr calls it “High Definition Audio Device”; Location is 0, (High Definition Audio Bus) so it’s on the motherboard apparently

Um uh, right-click on the speaker icon - you of course mean the icon that I normally left-click on to set my volume, yes? (I thought so). Well that comes up with a brief context menu but doesn’t include your “playback devices”). That menu has only Open Volume mixer, Open Sound settings, Spatial sound sub-menu, Sounds (control panel) and Troubleshoot sound problems. What next please?
