I thought you were going to do this.
I suggest we check your disk first to make sure it is still good.

Remove the linux usb stick and start the mac holding

    Command (⌘) and R.

Then follow this guide to check the disk.

How to repair a Mac storage device with Disk Utility – Apple Support (AU)

yes, that is what I want to do. It’s just not something I can plug in quick to check. I don’t mean to drag this out. Just heavy computer and no space so every time I try something new I have to lift it to temporary space and try stuff then stow it back away. I am not trying to be a pain, I am steadfastly pushing forward. You guys would have had this all squared away in 15 minutes!!

I got the computer hooked up again and trying to do the command and R button but not doing anything. However, I am not convinced it is not me doing something wrong? I don’t understand if I and pressing at the right moment. I feel like I am playing a video game and I was never good at those either. Its going to the same screen as before?
Do you only have a precise moment in time to get command and R pressed? Is there a sequence to them?

Thanks again guys, I will leave all hooked up and check back through day. I might not have more time until tonight…but like I said, I will leave stuff hooked up so maybe I can get forward progress in next day or two
                thanks
                Brian

Do you get to this place?
                  If yes Click on Utilities
                  Click on Disk utilities
Follow this from SELECT you disc in disc utilities
Disk Utility can find and repair errors related to the formatting and directory structure of a Mac storage device. Errors can lead to unexpected behaviour when using your Mac, and significant errors might even prevent your Mac from starting up completely.

If the above does not work.
Turn power off at power point
Remove the power cord from the computer itself for 30sec.
                            Back in and power on.

                            Option-Shift-Command-R
                            Hold all 4 together
If you get a different screen leave it at that and come back to me with what you see.

                              Hi Peter
I tried these again. I even put fresh batteries in keyboard. It is wireless. Not sure if you saw that yesterday. I wonder if mine is not communicating fast enough. Maybe need USB keyboard?
I just get the following screen like always and it takes about 2min of this white loading screen

Even a windows keyboard wired could work.
Did you try unplugging the power cable from the computer?
With the wireless keyboard push the on button and get a green light then try.

With a wired windows keyboard replace the option with the windows key.

                                Press Windows key +R key
Are you holding both keys in at the same time?
                                Try
                                Windows key + Alt + Shift + R
You have to press and hold the keys before the chime
