I tried to follow the instruction from the link in post 21. Step two failed :

Afdrukbeheer stuurprogramma verwijderen.png

Removing the printer driver with Powershell failed because the driver is allegedly in use by one or more printers.

Trying the instruction from post 22. The printer is not listed :

Apparaten en printers.png

Moreover, the device properties windows don't have an Advanced tab, only a General and Hardware tab.

I'll try to prevent the print spooler from starting with Windows.

I prevent the Print Spooler from starting.

I try the instructions ifromhttps://pureinfotech.com/remove-printer-driver-windows-10/ again.
Deleting print driver using Print Management fails because no drivers are listed.
Removing it with Powershell fails as well because the spooler service is not reachable.

So I restart in safe mode. The drivers still aren't listed (so I can't remove any) and the Print Spooler can't work in safe mode.

Lets try this
Yor pic in post #24 shows no printer installed.
Go too control panel and install the printer.
When the wizard runs untick the box that says it will query the printer for the driver.
When it ask for a print driver choose Generic driver>Generic text only
Test from notepad

I installed the printer as TCP/IP printer with generic text only driver.
The test page only pinrted once.

Using the Generic / Text Only printer in Notepad worked and it only printed once. The HP LaserJet 1022n is also visible in Notepad, but it doesn’t do anything.
Printing with the generic printer from LibreOffice printed single a blank page. Printing with the LaserJet from LibreOffice didn’t do anything.

What does “Go to the generic printer“ mean?

If I go to 'Apparaten en printers' as in the second image of post 24, then I get stuck because there is no Advanced tab.

I can also go to 'Printers en scanners' :

Printers en scanners.png

Righ-clicking doesn't do anything. I can however find an Advanced tab there somewhere with a New... option for driver which starts 'Wizard Printerstuurprogramma toevogen', which gets me to here :

Wizard Printerstuurprogramma toevogen.png

In there 'Bladeren...' expects me to point to a CD with an .inf file.

'Volgende >' (Next) is ambiguous. The next screen has a 'Voltooien' (Complete) button, but it fails to explain what that will do. I try it anyway. It closes the wizard and doesn't seem to do anything else. (I also tried selecting Generic under 'Fabrikant, no avail.)

In Device Manager i can also find the generic printer in the print queue, but I can't find an Advance tab there.

That is because you did not go via control panel
When you have this point
1660607034885.png

Click on Bladeren
You will get a pop up window Install from disk
Click on browse

Then change the path to where you have the PCL file you downloaded in post #28
then finish the wizard
Test with notepad

I go back to “In there 'Bladeren...' expects me to point to a CD with an .inf file. "
I manage to get Explorer to show me the .exe file. Clicking 'Openen' having it selected produces the error dialog box sound and seemingly does nothing else.

Stuurprogramma zoeken.png

I cancel and close the wizard.
Printing from Notepad using the Laserjet doesn't do anything. Printing from Notepad using the generic driver prints one page.

You have not extracted the file you downloaded
You need to extract it and then either let the exe run
or point to that folder.
It will normally put it in C:\HP Universal Print driver.
expects me to point to a CD with an .inf file.
No not cd
It wants the file
so instead of pointing to the CD you point to the folder.
You then change the generic driver to the PCL driver

I run the downloaded executable, which extracts itself to many files.
I try the procedure of post 31. I don’t know what I am supposed to point to. so I point to a file at random, namely hpmews02.inf. to see what will happen.

Stuurprogramma HP Universal Printing PCL 6.png

I pick HP Universal Printing PCL 6 (v7.0.1).
That seems to install something.

I test the new new printer from Notepad. It is unclear what it printed, but it is not correct. I removed paper after it had ‘printed’ 3. Strangely enough the print queue is empty.
Trying again. The printer prints the first page incorrectly and tries to print more pages. This time the print queue is not empty, but as I watch it the print task disappears.

I try to print from LibreOffice. The page is printed incorrectly and the printer tries to print more pages. At least the print queue emptying automatically is an improvement.

It was suggested to me you try and connect via usb and see what happens.
If that does not work.
Try
Can you create a new user on the computer and set the printer up normally using the HP original driver
and test with notepad

@PeterOz :

Yes, I had the Generic / Text Only Printer replaced.

Now, I go to ‘Printers en scanners’ and pick the HP Universal Printing PLC 6 (v7.0.1) to replace it. I do as in post 31. I again use the file hpmews02.inf.

Stuurprogrammabestand kiezen.png

Then I pick the HP Universal Printing PLC 6 printer, without the ‘(v7.0.1)’ .

In ‘Printers en scanners’ and in ‘Apparaten in printers’ the v.7.0.1 has been replaced by the newly installed one.

I print from Notepad uning the PCL 6 printer. It prints incorrectly and tries to print more pages.

I connect the printer to my PC via USB and it immediately tries to print. I turn it off, add a page and on to see what. It is a page I tried to print from LibreOffice from my previous meddling. It again triy to print more pages. Looking in print queues I see it is the HP LaserJet 1022n, which has 3 tasks. I never used or installed this printer via USB. I think it is a remnant from an TCP /IP installation.

I delete the 3 tasks and turn off and then on the printer.

I try to print something from Notepad using the HP LaserJet 1022n. It prints once correctly.
I try to print something from LibrfeOffice using the HP LaserJet 1022n. It prints once correctly.

Installing the printer via USB thus seems futile.

I’ll probably try setting up the printer from a different user account this afternoon, although that don’t what is ‘the HP original driver’.

I created a new user account and logged into that account to try the following :

Printing from Notepad using the HP LaserJet 1022n didn’t do anything.
Printing from Notepad using the HP Universal Printing PLC 6 printed incorrectly and tried to print more pages.

So I installed the printer as a TCP/IP printer with new driver (automatically found apparently), called HP LaserJet 1022n (Kopie 1).

The test page printed fine and just once.

Printing from LibreOffice using the HP LaserJet 1022n (Kopie 1) printed correctly and tried to print more pages.
Printing from Notepad using the HP LaserJet 1022n (Kopie 1) printed correctly and tried to print more pages.
In both cases I got the notification that the document could not be printed.

It is a page I tried to print from LibreOffice from my previous meddling
Hmmm
Ok go to control panel > Devices and printers remove all the HP printers.
1) Hold down the Windows Key and press R to bring up the Run dialog.

2) Type services.msc then press Enter.

3) Find the Print Spooler service in the list. Right-click it, then select Stop.

4) Minimize the Services window. Hold down the Windows Key and press R to bring up the Run dialog.

5) Type or copy and paste: %systemroot%\System32\spool\printers\ then press Enter

6) Click on 1 file then select all of the files by holding CTRL and pressing A

7) Press the Delete key to delete all of the files.

8) Go back to the Services window right-click Print Spooler then select Start.

Reboot
If you look in Libre Office to print you should not see the choice to print to a HP Printer
If true
Go back to control panel Devices and Printers
Reinstall the printer with Generic text driver
Test from from notepad
and test from Libre Office - make sure it is the HP with generic text driver you are printing to
