Hello,

I just got my hands on a somewhat old Toshiba Satellite C55D-C from 2015. It has a 128GB SSD that was fully wiped. I wanted a laptop to run, well ideally a 9x OS, but I only found drivers for XP at the oldest. That's still alright to play some games from the late '90s/early 2000s, so I decided to try and install XP on there.

It's been 4 days and I'm stumped. I tried making a bootable USB using Rufus on my desktop. I tried using Easy2Boot. I tried ISOtoUSB or whatever. I tried burning a bootable install cd using CDBurnerXP and then Imgburn. I messed around with the boot options in the bios. I tried formatting the USB/burning the CD on different PCs. I even installed Windows 8.1 (the only version I had to hand) to see if that would solve anything. Not a single option has worked. It always boots to a dos interface for a second, then it boots into Windows 8.1 as if nothing happened.

How the hell do I get Windows XP on there? Is it even possible?

Welcome to PCHF :)

Far as I know you need to be somewhere in this ballpark.... Click Me

Format the USB and load Ventoy right after formatting.
Put your XP iso onto the USB with Ventoy loaded.

Let me tag you some help, when either of these guys come online they should be able to help.

I've never needed to slipstream stuff into the XP image, so no help on that front.
equally, XP had always been an easy install too!

just for testing, have you tried getting Win10 with the Media Creation Tool and seeing how the driver support is for the Satellite?
I want to say you'll be pleasantly surprised.

is the XP setup for 32 or 64bit?

so your issue is getting XP onto a bootable USB stick, not the actual installation of XP (at this stage)?

Your problem will be a big chance that xp will not load from a usb
Most things do not have the usb drivers untill xp is installed also trouble with the ssd drivers
Since you can boot to win 8. I would copy the xp cd to the ssd
reboot to cmd prompt then run the setup file for xp

do you have XP on a CD?
if so, is it an official MS burnt version (so it'll be bootable), or one you have burnt yourself (which may not be burnt correctly)?

First off, thank you all for the quick responses. I'll try some of these solutions when I'm home.

As for your questions, I am trying to install Windows XP Professional SP3 32-bit (specifically from this link: link removed for security reasons ADMIN). I have tried both a bootable USB stick and a CD I burned myself. I had tried a bootable USB before installing Windows 8.1 on that laptop, although I didn't try a lot of different programs to format said USB and I didn't try a bootable CD at that point.

I made some progress. Apparently, by changing boot to CSM mode I could run a bootable USB drive via Easy2Boot. I even got to the setup screen.
The issue now is that setup doesn't detect any hard drives, and I reckon it has something to do with an error about DPMS or something. How do I get this sorted?

Okay, so I managed to actually install Windows XP on the laptop properly. At the moment I'm just trying to install the required drivers, which is still proving to be rather annoying.

On the problem machine.... If the internet driver is not installed, then you may need to use a USB storage device to transfer the tool then the log. If you have a usb wireless adapter might be the way to go to get things rolling.

Download Unknown Device Identifier v9.00

  • Run it.
  • Allow it to complete.
  • Hit File >>Save
  • The default name will be DeviceList
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Open DeviceList.txt copy contents.
  • Attach it here.
