Perform a clean start
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135

If that fails, re-enable normal start (reverse the clean start options)
It is not necessary to boot into normal mode at this point; just reverse your clean start options

Start in Safe Mode, create a new user profile - Local account
https://mspoweruser.com/how-to-add-a-new-user-in-windows-10/
Boot into normal mode, test

If that fails,
Roll back your video driver

Clean start - still black screen
Unable to create new user profile - nothing happens when I click "Add User"
Roll back video driver is greyed out

Can I just point out, in case it's relevant, from the tech video you posted a few days ago I only used to get into safe mode, I didn't follow any other advice.

My hunch remains -
video is being output to one of the display ports and not the DVI port

Since we cannot rollback the video driver, we could uninstall it and choose, if available, to delete the driver files. I do not know if this will work in Safe Mode. We can try though.

I was having a stupid attack. Confusing the WinH8 and WindX GUI with earlier versions and forgot we were in safe mode. I see nothing malware related here, but I thought I did when TaskMan didn't 'look right'.

It has been so long since I last did tech support that I forgot who gets tied up.

Reactions: Malnutrition
Before I proceed with removing video driver I want to re-cap/update.
I activated administrator account but as soon as it logs in I get an error pop up "Sihost.exe - Hard error" when I click ok I see the desktop (only works in safe mode) but none of the icons or start/search menu work, I have to alt, ctrl, del to switch user or shut down.

Also, in device manager there is an SAS controller with an exclamation mark (Don't know if relevant)

Should I proceed to remove video driver?

At least one of your storage volumes have failed. You reported a working WIndows 10 instalation that failed during a Windows Update session. This implies - but does not prove - that a driver update introduced an error condition. Up to this point, I assumed a video driver. I was probably wrong. The two errors reported in your last post prove that your user profiles are corrupt or are not physically present.

Get your hardware ID for the SAS controller. Post the (odd looking) string here.

HP does not provide a Windows 10 driver for this controller on the Z820 platform. I have done 0 research on why not.

Do you know how to enter BIOS/UEFI and report the selected drive configuration? Your workstation is hardware RAID capable. How many physical hard drives do you have?

I know how to get into bios but not sure what you want me to find.

SAS Id's:
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1D6B&SUBSYS_158B103C&REV_05
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1D6B&SUBSYS_158B103C

I am only interested in knowing if anything changed. Remember, we had a working system, updates applied, now Windows cannot see your user profiles/hard drives (if a controller is not loading, the drives attached to it are also not loading).

So, forget the BIOS for now.

Thank you, should I double click the file or do the manual install from device manager?

^I do find a reference to deactivate Intel AMT in BIOS
http://www.netzspezialist.de/blog/2016/05/23/windows-10-on-hp-z620/

Even though this is in reference to the 620 workstation, it makes sense that it would apply to the 820. Keep in mind - server hardware and workstation hardware are not exactly the same as desktop hardware. Workstations are used in a managed environment (AMT applies) and desktops are not (AMT does not apply).

While running the driver installation I have a message saying the existing driver is newer than the one I'm trying to install should I overwrite the existing?

Did you activate Windows 10 before the trouble started?

If yes, overwrite.
If no... thinking and waiting your answer.

If Windows 10 was activated, your machine is licensed and we can install 10 clean, avoiding the driver update issue that seems to have caused this problem.

I do not know for sure but Windows 10 was running for months before this issue so I assume it auto activated
