Solved GPU Black Screen

Hi, I recently switched from AMD to Intel and since then my GPU will not receive a signal only giving a black screen but the onboard graphics work. I have taken the GPU to be tested at my local shop and it worked fine so I thought it could have been my motherboard, after trying with a new motherboard it still gives a black screen only working with the onboard graphics. What could be the issue here?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

CPU: i5 9600k
Motherboard: MSI Z390 A PRO
GPU: GTX 1080
PS: EVGA 600W BQ

g'day ifcben and welcome to the forums,

when you switched from an AMD to an Intel processor, you must have changed your motherboard then, not later in trying to troubleshoot the GPU not working?

have you checked for firmware upgrades for the Z390 chipset?

Yes I've installed all the latest drivers for the motherboard and the latest bios update

dumb question..... does your GTX1080 need any extra power cables connected? (long shot)
the the GPU was working fine with the old mobo and CPU?
any chance you can get your hands temporarily on another GPU (friends, neighbours, family, work) and try that option to see if (coincidentally) it's your GPU?

It uses an 8+6 pin connector and yes the gpu was working fine the day I disassembled the pc. Unfortunately I can't get a hold of another gpu unless I take it to the shop again but I'm tight on money at the moment so not much I can do

so the motherboard is new with all the updates. (y)
have you installed the GPU software?

sorry - another dumb question - when the GPU is installed you have moved the monitor plugs from the onboard ports to the GPU ports?

the GPU shows in Device Manager?

Yes this is the second motherboard I've tried and i've installed all of the drivers and the most recent bios update. I can't install the gpu drivers because my pc isn't detecting it in device manager even though my local pc shop has confirmed it working. Yes i've tried a hdmi cable in the gpu and a vga cable both giving black screens. When the gpu is connected the fans spin and it's booting into windows with a black screen I know this because the second I switch the cable into the igpu it's already on the desktop

the problem must be related to the new mobo.
the nvidia site states a minimum 500watt PSU, so you're running close to that as it is.
add to that load whatever else is on your rig, plus a more power hungry CPU, and maybe it's a power issue.

it would be good to know the test rig the computer shop used: mobo type, PSU watts.

if not lack of power caused, the next thing would be checking that GPU compatibility with the mobo site.
and is the GPU PCI-x v3 x16 compliant?

This is the second board I've tried though, the first board was an asus z370. The amd build was an r5 1600 which is rated at 65 watts and the i5 9600k is rated at 95 watts which isn't much more. I'm not sure about the gpu pcie lane
