    BSOD - BCCode: 116 - Win 7 Desktop shuts down randomly & reboots

    Good day all,

    It’s been a while. Glad to see the forum is running, and I hope doing well.

    I’ve followed the posting instructions and have attached the minidump files.

    Here are my PC specs. ** Note that I have a 6 monitor setup **

    The problem started around Nov. 4, 2020 and has occurred 7 times to date. I ran Zemana Antimalware, JRT, Adware Removal Tool, Ultra Virus Killer, Kaspersky, Rogue Killer. Also, in SAFE MODE ran sfc scannow, chkdsk, tweaking.com. PC was also cleaned thoroughly blowing out all dust from the Corsair case enclosure.


    My Windows 7 OS is up to date, but the NVIDIA drivers are not since they have caused problems in the past especially with their telemetry, NVIDIA container / backend.log.bak file which was chewing up my C drive free space ( SSD. The same thing appears to be happening now.

    The blue screen message was something like - “Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed.” Below is a pic I found on the internet.

    Here is the pop up error info after the PC reboots

    One solution is to delete the display driver and then reinstall in Device Manager, but will I risk losing my settings for the 6 monitor setup ??

      Typical behaviour of something overheating, this includes the PSU overheating internally,

      [COLOR=rgb(226, 80, 65)]Can you post the brand and model name or number of the power supply (PSU).

      Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

      To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

      In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

      In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

        Hi phillpower2,

        Thanks for your help. I installed a CPU/GPU widget and temps are high IMO.
        CPU getting up to 74 Celsius at times, but typically around 50 C to 60 C.

            Hello paulwb,

            looks like two issues going on, one hardware and one software related.

            In case you are not already aware, adding even just a second monitor to a PC can cause the temps to increase by up to 10 °C.

            The thermal trigger for your CPU is 66.8 °C and it reading 43 °C in Speccy when the computer is not under load from any software running is being caused entirely by you having so many displays hooked up.

            You made a wise choice when you opted for the PSU but how old is it, first released way back in 2011 so has the potential to be almost nine years old and therefore well out of warranty, the age of the PSU + the additional monitors could be causing the PSU to overheat internally.

            We can see a few things going on in Speccy but before elaborating too much I have a second question, how long ago did you have McAfee running on the computer.

              Hi phillpower2,

              The PC was built in Feb 2014 so it’s been in use for 6.5+ years… without any monitor related temperature problems. The warranty on the PSU is 7 years so I’m still covered according to the warranty card.

              McAfee I believe was preinstalled somehow, 6 years ago, and I didn’t leave it on for long. Maybe a month, then uninstalled.

              Why do you ask?

              Cyberpower > 1000 PFCLCD - for 6, 24” monitors only

              Cyberpower > 1500 AVR - for PC tower, mouse, keyboard, speakers

                Sorry missed your double post earlier, GPU drivers were again the cause of the crash.

                Does your warranty card say seven years, there were two versions of the PSU and one of them only had a five year warranty, regardless, 6.5 years of running your set up would take it out of any PSU, only putting forward possibilities here and you are free to take onboard or dismiss as you see fit.

                Regarding McAfee, you have it on your computer and it can be seen to be running in Speccy.

                  Correct, the warranty card shows 7 years.

                  I think replacing it is a good idea.

                  You mentioned “We can see a few things going on in Speccy” - what are they?

                  How can I kill anything McAfee altogether?

                  What about updating my NVIDIA drivers? Anything I don’t need to install via Custom Install ? Should I install the latest driver or find out which is the most recent stable version? Do you recommend disabling from services.msc,

                          OK. I’ve run the McAfee removal tool. Ran Speccy, queried “McAfee” in the output and got nothing. I think it’s gone.



                          However, I did notice NVIDIA is up to their tricks again and spotted the nvcontainer…

                            Looks like you cleared McAfee which is a good start, we will be able to confirm for you that it has gone.

                            Speccy asides for now as while we can see a few issues going on I doubt that they are responsible for the computer shutting down and/or restarting.

                            I suspect all we will see is kernel 41 errors and the computer was not shut down properly etc but lets see what MTB flags up, if the aforementioned are reported it does go some way to supporting the weak/overheating PSU suspicions.

                            Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.

                            Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options;

                            List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
                            List Installed Programs
                            List Devices (Only Problems)
                            List Users, Partitions and Memory size

                            Click on Go.

                            Post the resulting log in your next reply for us if you will.
