Games cause computer to just restart or freeze

Hi everyone,

My son (almost 13) has a gaming pc that his dad built a couple of years ago. Most games are played via Steam and lots of them play fine with no problems. The games that consistently have issues are No Man’s Sky, Stellaris, God of War, and most recently Hogwarts Legacy. Sometimes the screen just turns black and the computer restarts or shuts down and sometimes the game just closes. We have tried lowering graphic quality settings and that doesn’t seem to

I don’t know what is causing the issues we are having. I’m not sure if something needs to be upgraded, or if there is something else wrong. We will work through any suggestions together, and hopefully learn some great troubleshooting tips. I have seen on some other threads that Speccy info is usually requested, so I have already done that. Last week, we increased the RAM from 16G to 32G with only minimal improvements.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Welcome to PCHF,

Speccy cannot provide it so can you post the brand and model name or number of the PSU for us.

Active power scheme: High performance

While we look at the Speccy report, one thing I will suggest is that you change the Windows Power Plan to Balanced, High Performance is a form of overclocking that is known to cause stability and overheating issues.

Thank you for such a quick reply.

The PSU is Corsair RM750 (2019) 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

We have changed the power setting now.

A very good PSU so would only advise that all internal connections to and from the PSU are secure.

Coupe of things of note in Speccy, not sure that they would cause the sort of behaviour you mention though, the High Performance setting would though.

Don` t want to overburden you so will do one thing at a time;
Type: DDR4
Size: 8192 MBytes
Manufacturer: Corsair
Max Bandwidth: DDR4-2132 (1066 MHz)
Part Number: CMW16GX4M2D3600C18
SPD Ext.: XMP

The RAM is not appropriate for your CPU, AMD state here up to 3200MHz and if you have XMP enabled the RAM will get auto OCd past what the CPU can handle and the PC fall over.

Ryzen CPUs do not like slow RAM either so best give them what they need.

Go into the BIOS, disable XMP and then manually set the RAM to run at 3200MHz and the voltage to 1.35V, save the new settings, exit the BIOS, restart and test by using the PC as you normally would.

You are welcome btw

We’ve opened the BIOS but I can’t see where I can turn off the XMP. It looks like it is already off. I also can’t see where I can change the RAM to run slower either.???‍♀️

Fair enough, I’ll see if I can find it. I suppose you can’t just wave your magic wand and fix things automatically.

Wish I could, things would be so much easier, tip, if you have a notebook or tablet it would be easier to get the info up on that so that you can follow the steps by what you can see, the info is not all on the one page so following it from memory would be tricky.

Good Morning,

I think I have managed to change the RAM settings (yay for me???) We still have the same issue afterwards. Chris played Hogwarts last night and it crashed after about half an hour. I’m using my laptop next to the PC so I have all the info I need. Do you need another Speccy? If so, here is one I prepared earlier.

Thank you???

RAM is all good so well done for that (y)

A quick look at your latest Speccy also tells us that the Windows Power Plan is still set to High Performance and not Balanced.

Avoid playing Hogwarts while we troubleshoot, check here and you will see that the game is known to have issues.

I thought he had changed the power setting. I’ll change it.

It is looking good. We’ve had no crashes on any of the other games that had issues. Thank you so much for all of your help. I’m assuming, if it turns out the issue hasn’t been resolved, I can link this thread to a new post?

Welcome to PCHF

I currently am playing Hogwarts Legacy for 8 hours straight and not a single crash.

Looking at your BIOS, your VCORE voltage is a little high. Have you checked to see if there’s any BIOS updates?
