It is always preferable to connect the system hard drive to sata port 0, but if your bios can see the hard drive you should be able to install an operating system to it.
The sata ports numbers are listed in all motherboard manuals, and most motherboards also have the port numbers printed next to each sata port.
Now which Operating System are you wanting to install?
Will this be a dual boot system?
What size is the HDD?
How old is that HDD and have you tested it to make sure that there are no issues with it?
Honestly would not put Linux on it if you are going to sell it.

I put a 500gb HD in it and I put Ubuntu on it. I don’t know much about Linux.
