Mouse device disconnecting and reconnecting periodically

    Hello,

(I am not a native English speaker, but I think my English should be understandable)

Even though I post this under hardware issues, I am not certain it is a hardware problem…

While playing games, my mouse device disconnects and rapidly reconnects again periodically. You could call it a freeze, a second where the mouse is unresponsive and then it becomes responsive again. But technically it is a disconnect and reconnect, because I went into to advanced sound settings and turned off the notification sound of device disconnects and connects and then when the mouse ‘freezes’, there is no notification sound anymore, with this notification sound turned off.
Obviously I want to find out why and solve the issue, many thanks to anyone who can come up with good ideas and suggestions.
A small detail: This issue can also happen while just managing files, writing etc. (or just moving the cursor around without clicking anything) but I notice it more while gaming and seems to happen more while playing games.
It makes no difference whether I play through GOG, Steam, Blizzard battle[dot]net app or any other app.

The mouse is HP, I guess an old one, with USB connection. Very standard normal USB OPTICAL MOUSE. “Device status: This device is working properly.”
Under Control Panel and device and printers it says “Model number: Unavailable”, but I could find the following info:
    Assy P/N: 265986-011 spares P/N: 537749-001 ct:fatsK0K67ZXRDS
    M/N: MOAFUO
In device manager I can find the following info:

HID-compliant mouse Driver date: 21/06/2006 Driver version: 10.0.19041.1
Driver provider: microsoft Digital signer: microsoft windows

    My Pc info in general:
    CPU: 11th Gen Intel(R) Core™ i7-11700F @ 2.50GHz 2.50 GHz GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti
    Motherboard: Acer Predator PO3-630
48 GB installed physical RAM (4 RAM blocks/sticks in total 2x16 and 2x8 and installed in correct slots according to official motherboard manual):
    manufacturer partnumber serialnumber
    DIMM4 Kingston ACR32D4U2S8HD-8X 90523AC1
    DIMM2 Kingston ACR32D4U2S8HD-8X 7C530560
    DIMM3 Corsair CMK32GX4M2B3200C16 00000000
    DIMM1 Corsair CMK32GX4M2B3200C16 00000000
My monitors are set to run at around 144 Hz

Things I have tested and done:

    1)

I have changed the default setting under power management, in device manager, from allowing to not allowing the computer to turn off this device to save power. This makes no difference.

    2)
I have no funky settings in mouse setting and mouse properties. Scheme for example is set to Windows Default (system scheme) and I have tried to set it to “none”, which makes no difference.

    3)
I have tried connecting different mice to the PC with this issue and also to all the different USB ports and it makes no difference.

    4)
I have tried to connect my mice to another computer and on the other computer there are no issues, none of the mice disconnects and rapidly reconnects all the time there. So the mice are functioning as they should.

    5)
I have tried to reset my PC to factory settings, while it had windows 11, which made no difference.
In the same line of methodology I then also tried to make a proper clean install of windows and I even tried to downgrade to windows 10, just to see if that would make a difference, which it did not.
Also, yes I deleted all partitions during the clean install, so that I only had unallocated space left. It made no difference. mouse cursor behaves the same way as before the clean install.

    6)
Oh of course, almost forgoet to mention that I have also tried to update mouse driver and I have tried to uninstall device and let the system update mouse drivers automatically at system restart and it makes no difference.

Any suggestions? (Btw, will donate for sure if I get a solution here)

        Lets also do this.

        Download Speccy.

[HEADING=3]To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:[/HEADING]
        [ol]
[li]In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.[/li][li]In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.[/li][li]Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot dialog box. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box[/li][/ol]

            Hi again,
I am not sure how wise it is to leave the speccy link open to the public for too long, there are a lot of details that could be used for questionable activities and I cannot delete/edit my previous post.
Perhaps you can hide it or something?

Anyways soon bedtime for me here in this timezone, but will be checking in again tomorrow at some point and thanks a lot for replying and helping out.

[COLOR=rgb(226, 80, 65)]Nothing in Speccy can be used for any activities.

You are 2 versions of BIOS behind. You are currently on R01-A1 the latest is R01-A4

I see you tried other mice on the problem PC, are these other mice newer or the same “age”? 2006

Okay thanks, good to know, maybe I was a bit paranoid about publishing all those details after I read some warning about it somewhere else.

All the different mice are the same old HP 2006 ones, yes.

I downloaded the intel assistant and then downloaded the following 3 updates:
Intel® Wireless Bluetooth® version 23.40.0 Driver version varies depending on the wireless adapter installed.
                Version:23.40.0.2 Release date: April 9, 2024 Size: 58.41 MB
                Windows® 10 and Windows 11* Wi-Fi package drivers 23.40.0 for the Intel® Wi-Fi 7/Wi-Fi 6E/Wi-Fi 6 and Intel® 9000 series Wireless Adapters
Version: 23.40.0.4 Release date: April 9, 2024 Size: 39.98 MB
Wi-Fi, Ethernet drivers and Killer Software for the Intel® Killer™ products.
                Version: 10.68.815.2023 Release date:January 9, 2024 Size: 64.53 MB

Ok then I need to update the BIOS as I understand.[/color]

Oh and also another little comment regarding testing mice:
If I was to try other newer mice on my problem PC, it would take a few days at least for them to arrive (I would have to purchase them, since I don’t have any other newer mice in the house). But if I am to run that experiment, would you recommend against a certain old age of mice? Like only buying mice from a certain year and onwards or would there be anything else I should keep in mind regarding testing newer mice?

Hey great news: after the restart during the update of the BIOS (along with the other updates) I have not stumbled upon one single mouse disconnect issue.

It seems very promising, maybe my issue is totally fixed now. But I will want to test it a bit further, just to be certain.
I will report back here soon when I am certain that the issue really is gone.

                        Hi again,

After testing now I can unfortunately conclude that the issue is still there. For some reason it was as if it was gone for an hour or so (after the updates and restart), but now it happens pretty much as often as before.

I’ve rarely had issues with older mice but I don’t want to rule that out in your case. 2006 is ancient in the PC world. If you purchase a “new” one from Amazon, it should be in the age range you want.

                            Open an elevated command prompt.

Click Start, type cmd, then- CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER

An elevated command prompt should open.

Enter the following and hit Enter.

                            pnputil /enum-devices /connected > c:\Users\hanse\Desktop\pnputil.txt

Include the output in your next post please.

hey, thanks for all the help so far.
                              I donated a little earlier

                              "Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.19045.4291]

                              C:\Windows\system32>"

This is what i typed and what the output/result is the last line after i press enter

But hey anyways, great news. The issue really is solved now.

I don’t know what the fault was and why it is solved now.

But I can say that My Nvidia GPU drivers were not updated, for some reason they could not be updated through device manager, which I used. In device manager it said that drivers were the newest even though they were not. I updated my GPU with some Nvidia app, “Nvidia Experience”

Also I deleted blizzard battle..net app and all blizzard games and all hidden folders.
I know it sounds weird and crazy. But every time this mouse problem occured it was always triggered or started during one particular blizzard game (and then it always continued even when that particular game was shut down and when the blizzard app was shut down). Maybe it is a coincidence, I don’t know. I can only report the patterns and things I observe and experience no matter how unlikely they are. Maybe battle..net or one of the blizzard games caused some really funky problems. And 3 of my hp mice seem to be irreversibly ‘corrupted’ (the ones I tested previously when I wrote the original post here) or damaged. But I have at least 6 pairs of these particular old HP mice and the last thing I did after these other things I mentioned and the BIOS update, was to connect one of the unused HP mice also.

All in all, now there are no issues. I have tested now several hours in a row and not 1 single issue occured with the mouse or anything else, so these old mice seem to work perfectly. Maybe we will never know the reason, but it is all good now.
