    Noise from GPU on shutdown

    Hi,
I bought a Dell XPS 8950 with GeForce RTX 3060Ti 8gb earlier this year. Since I’ve had it, when I shut down the computer just before it powers off completely the GPU fan makes a grinding/whirring sound for about 1.5 seconds, as if a piece of paper has been caught in one of the blades. It is not the same sound as when the fans crank up under heavy use.
I’m not aware of any problems with the GPU and everything seems to work as it should.
Does anyone know if this sound is normal or should I be concerned as it’s bugging me.
    Many thanks,
    Adam

    Hello

Have you checked the gpu to make sure the fan blades are not hitting any wires etc ?

Hi Veeg, yes - I can see the GPU through the PC case and all looks fine and clear.

Hi Bruce, yes only at shutdown, every single time - same noise, same duration.

OK cool, in that case, and especially since it has done it from day one, it’s just a ‘feature’ of the new card.
I suspect the blades are not 100% balanced and as they wind down, they pass through a certain speed that matches a frequency of the card or motherboard and a vibration occurs.

You could try removing the card and reseating it, you may get lucky.
Or you could get a support bracket for the card.

Hi Bruce, many thanks for this as it suggests it’s nothing serious. I’ll have a go at reseating the card to see if it solves it.
              Cheers,
              Adam
