    Black Screen Crashes

    Hello,

I’ve been getting multiple black screen crashes with my pc. I’ve built this pc a year and 8 months ago when gpu prices were still awful so I got a Nvidia 1050ti temporarily. And didn’t had any single issue with my system. A month ago I bought a XFX RX 6950 XT of amazon for my system. Before installing the new gpu I used ddu to clear the Nvidia drivers and installed the amd drivers from the amd website. used the gpu for two days and the black screen crashes started to happen. Checked event viewer for the warnings and errors thats happens prior to the crashes and nothing were unusual or unique from when I had the 1050ti. I saw in youtube that its better to have updated chipset drivers and gpu drivers. So I used ddu again to remove amd grahpic drivers, updated the chipset drivers and then installed the gpu drivers again. the problem stopped for one day then continued to happen again. Also, updated the MB bios to latest version and after finishing the update the pc kept crashing when it gets to the windows lock screen and bios settings once. So I turned off the pc and swapped back to the 1050ti and the pc kept working without any problem for 3 days. I decided to test the 6950xt on another system. so I swapped my 6950xt with my friend’s 3080 to rule out to ensure if the gpu was the problem and for me to test if my power supply was the problem. My pc was fine for 3 days then returned to crash again while my friend’s pc didn’t have any issue.

    FYI:
I am running a separate cable for each 8 pin connector (no daisy chaining) and ensured that they are pushed all way in from gpu and psu side. I’ve temps and the max temperature I’ve seen the gpu goes is 81C and 78C for gpu (I know its a little bit high but I don’t think it would cause a crash).

    Specs:
    CPU: Ryzen 5 5600x
    RAM: TEAMGROUP T-Force Delta RGB 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18
MB: MSI MPG B550 GAMING PLUS ATX AM4
GPU: XFX Speedster MERC 319 Radeon RX 6950 XT
    PSU: Corsair RM850x (2021) 850 W 80+ Gold

    Edit:
CPU max temp is 81C and GPU max temp is 78C
    Further info:
The crashes doesn’t happen exclusively during only gaming, It happens also during browsing or even in idle so there is no constant pattern to when the crashes happens.

      The 3080 requires a 750 W PSU.
The 6950 minimum requirement is 850W. Anytime your are at minimum requirements, especially on a PSU, you’ll get minimum performance or no performance in your case.

What PSU does your friend have?

sure its 850W is the minimum but its paired with Ryzen 5 5600x not a high end cpu. the maximum the system can draws is around 550-600W there is still 250-300W left. I don’t think power delivery is an issue here.

          How did you measure this?

          Lets get a Speccy.

          Download Speccy.

[HEADING=3]To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:[/HEADING]
          [ol]
[li]In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.[/li][li]In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.[/li][li]Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot dialog box. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.[/li][/ol]

PCPARTPICKER, its says my system draws 529w exactly but I am accounting for the extra power that cpu or gpu can draw cuz I’ve seen them many times draw more power than their TDP

Just so I’m clear, Your friend ran your card (6950) in his PC for 3 days with no problems? You ran his card (3080) for 3 days and still had the same crash?

That error indicates the PC shutdown unexpectedly. Every time you force shutdown the PC because of the crash, that error will be generated.

When it crashes, does it turn off then black screen with no fans or lights working in the PC case? Or, does it black screen and the fan and lights are still running?

Have you seen a blue screen at all?

                  Lets do this.

                  Gather Event Log (Application):
                  [ol]
[li]Open an elevated command prompt and enter the following command.[/li][li]wevtutil epl Application %userprofile%\Desktop\application.evtx[/li][li]Please zip up the log which should be saved to your Desktop and then attach to your next post.[/li][/ol]

                  Gather Event Log (System):
                  [ol]
[li]Open an elevated command prompt and enter the following command.[/li][li]wevtutil epl System %userprofile%\Desktop\system.evtx[/li][li]Please zip up the log which should be saved to your Desktop and then attach to your next post.[/li][/ol]

I don’t force shutdown the pc. The crash starts by the monitors suddenly going black. All the fans and rgb lights stay, which includes the case fans, ram, cpu block and gpu. Sometimes the fans rgb light flicker once or several times for few seconds. Then the pc reboots itself automatically. I don’t need to force shutdown the pc.

No, didn’t encounter any blue screen issue once. All the crashes has been like I’ve mentioned above.

Sorry, I couldn’t figure how to run the commands mentioned.

                    Here what appears to me:
                    “Required argument(s) is/are not specified.
                    The parameter is incorrect.”

Are you running the prompt as Admin?

copy and paste exactly as typed.

                      wevtutil epl Application %userprofile%\Desktop\application.evtx

                      wevtutil epl System %userprofile%\Desktop\system.evtx

I just tested them on 2 PC’s and they work.

The crash itself is an unexpected shutdown. Thats what that error (41) means.

I meant that when the crash happens I don’t need to force shutdown the pc to make it work again. The pc reboots itself automatically after the crash.

Unzip these to your desktop. Right-click each and run as administrator.

It will save a file on your desktop. Upload these 2 files.

                              Thanks @Rustys
