To follow up, someone else in the shop is going to look at the USB case ports next week. But from the software side, this has turned into a real s**t show, which is not over yet, already 8.5 hours and six reps into chat and phone with MS support.

For some reason yet to be determined, Office files won’t save in subfolders – e.g., C:\My MS Word Files – but only elsewhere like the desktop or a USB flash drive. The Save error is you “You don’t have permission to modify files in this network location” and something similar when I try to close the program and save. In the process of trying to fix it with a reinstall, though, my Office H&S 2019 wouldn’t activate. MS activation support yesterday says go back to the reseller, but they’re no longer around, so I had to buy the 2021 version. But with that, still no save. So I switch to Tech Support chat and after four hours and four reps, I end up with a Blue Screen of Death (Recovery in big letters)! Fortunately, I still had an old Win 10 DVD copy and apparently that allowed recovery of the system. However, now Office 2021 programs won’t even open. Even worse, they won’t update, repair, uninstall or reinstall by the commonly advertised methods. So I was really stuck (tried a Win 10 Repair Install too).

We had arranged for a call back this morning, but it didn’t come, so I got online chat again. After a good hour wading through yet another MS rep in India who didn’t have enough sense or gumption to pass me onto an expert right off, he finally got me to a “Research Engineer” in the Philippines. At last, someone who not only knew what they were doing, but also had an instruction sheet for how to uninstall Office in cases like this – and give me a retail image version. So that solved, we started to look at the Save problem, but then their Quick Assist remote system simply stopped connecting (known problem). To be continued Tuesday…

If anyone has any ideas about the Save issue…

Thanks. Step 3 refers to an owner’s tab that no longer exists. From there, the set up and terminology is different now.

I tried that Change link and dug down some, but was getting nowhere that led to a change. Instead on that first set, I used the Sharing tab to include me (private networks). My only question is if that’s a correct, best or even secure way of dealing with it. It has worked so far for saving new and edited docs in Word & Excel.

On second thought, I just changed everything, including SYSTEM, to full control and unchecked sharing. That seems to work too so far.

Good to know, thanks. If I had caught on in time, I probably could have saved myself a purchase.

New issue: Ran MS’s PC Health for Win 11. Obviously, the new configuration will handle it, but the app is giving the following message: “Your organization manages updates on this PC.” There is a personal, individual PC, so that’s erroneous. Where should I look to find its source? Thanks,

I was hooing you’d answer the question. If I understand the message, my computer is now seen as handled by a an organization. That’s new. That would seem more important than what the specific OS is.

do you log into a MS account on that PC?

Not sure what you’re asking. I did log in with my MS pw but turned that off.

in Settings, Accounts, Access work or school, you have disconnected from your MS account?
what type of network is the PC joined to: Workgroup or Domain?
are you logged onto a user account with admin rights or standard?
