Wrong thread. The board that went bad was an ASRock z97 Extreme6 with an i7-4790K, fourth gen. It’s being replaced with a 12th gen board and i5-12400.Comment

I got the rebuilt PC back yesterday — mobo, CPU, RAM, cables. After dealing with some cabling issues that required a return trip to the shop, I was able to get it going today. Everything is fine except the case front USB ports. In the OP, I wrote that the 3.0 ports were working but the 2.0 had quit. Actually, only one 3.0 was ok. The shop’s tech (one of four) said the ports were good for him, hence no repair or new case was needed. Now it’s back and the same ports still aren’t working. Going one by one…- Left 3.0 works fine
- Right 3.0 gets no response
- Left 2.0 gets no response
- Right 2.0 responds to SSD but not to mouse transmitter or anything else (just as before the rebuild)
Before going back to the shop, any ideas for things I can check or do? Thanks,Comment

and you can confirm with the shop that they tested all four front USB ports?
if so, that would mean the ports themselves and the cables to them, are fine and that it must be the device being connected is to blame.
but I suspect the shop may not have tested all four ports (just a hunch)!
and if you do take it back, also take the devices that don’t work so they can see the proof.Comment

Well, since it’s doing the same thing as before, when one 2.0 ports quit being recognized by a sports watch, then the mouse transmitter stopped on the other, and another transmitter/mouse didn’t change that, I expect it’s not what’s being hooked up. The mouse box says it uses 3V/10 mA, which is next to nothing (wired mouses commonly use 100 mA).Comment
