HP ProDesk 600 G1 Tower

Hi all, I’m new here and I really don’t know why… I should have joined much sooner…

Anyways, I have a little issue with this old girl… Until recently all was fine, now that I have tried everything I can think of, I’m looking for other ideas…

So the machine came with 8GB RAM installed (2x4GB), turned on one morning, and got the sweet sound of 5 beeps… OK, memory issue hopefully…

Yes it was, I removed the offending stick of RAM and proceeded to purchase another stick… Exactly the same brand size and everything…
It went well for a week or 2, then the new stick died too… I ran a full intensive diagnostic on the system, everything passed, so I couldn’t figure out why!?!

So next step, I purchased 2x4GB sticks, figured I would just renew it completely, to be sure they did match correctly… But, that didn’t work, as I got the 5 beeps again, with both sticks… Thinking them to be faulty, I returned them for replacements… Guess what? YUP, exactly the same issue…

So I am down to this one stick of 4GB, which is running ok, it allowed me to add another with it, but this wont be detected by the BIOS…

My next step, I completely stripped the whole machine down and cleaned it up… It looks like a brand new machine again, but for one little flaw…

I can STILL only use that one stick of 4GB RAM, but now it won’t allow me to add any more… I have completed a FULL system diagnostic, ALL PASSED…
I have checked the other RAM in another machine (same model), they all worked just fine, so there is no issue there…

So I’m on my knees now, asking my fellow tech-heads… What am I missing? ANY IDEAS??

Welcome to PCHF,

Sounds like the memory slot may have gone bad.

Info at the link says that the MB has four memory slots, if that is correct, have you tried using the other two slots.

Yeah, I tried all slots, with the one stick that works… They all work fine…
Also, I should update: I currently have 2 sticks in, system still only picks up the one, but CPU-Z is now saying 8GB Single Channel… Which has me more confused now…

What only picks up one.

CPUz reporting 8GB but only in single channel suggests that one of the sticks is in the wrong slot.

Going offline soon as I have an early start so no rush for me with the following;

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

Bios is only detecting one stick… CPU-Z is now only reporting 1x4GB…

Here’s the Speccy Snapshot:

Speccy is detecting four memory slots which means that the problem could be with the RAM slots or the second stick of RAM

There are a few things of note in Speccy but will stick with the most obvious ones first.

Power Profile
Active power scheme: High performance

Change the Windows Power Plan to Balanced, Ultra and High Performance are a form of overclocking that is known to cause stability and overheating issues and the setting should only be used for gaming type notebooks that have a discrete GPU that needs the extra power.

Try clearing the CMOS by removing the CR2032 battery from the MB and leaving it out overnight before putting it back in, see attachment below;

Once the battery has been removed, press the case power on button for twenty seconds to get rid of any residual charge in the system

I didn’t realise it was on High Performance… That’s been changed…

I know the slots are all fine, because I tested them with the one stick that works…

Surely not all the new RAM could be at fault though, right? I’ve triple checked the new RAM against the specs, it should work fine…

We can test the RAM further down the line if needs be but for now can you just stick with the CMOS resetting plan, leaving the battery out overnight while the PC is isolated from the mains power is the best way to make sure any bad settings get cleared, please note that also pressing the power on button with the battery removed and the PC disconnected from the mains is most important.

Ok, CMOS cleared and power plan set to Balanced… What’s next?

What[ICODE]s next is you clarify when you cleared the CMOS, we have no way of knowing if or when you followed the suggested steps and we don[/ICODE]t take chances by second guessing.

Thank you for your time, I appreciate you are busy and I didn’t want to waste it… However, I have decided to remove the issue, by upgrading to a new PC… It’s about time I did anyway…

So again, thank you for your time, and keep up the good work…

No worries and thanks for letting us know (y)

New PC and one for a project when you are at a loose end, what about using the retired computer as a HTPC.
