PC turns on but doesn't POST or display anything to monitor

    Hi all,

I’m having an issue where my computer is able to power on, but it doesn’t POST or display anything to the screen. I pulled out my hard drives and GPU, just to see if it could boot, and use the onboard videocard instead but no luck.

I’m just not sure if it’s the PSU not supplying enough power to the motherboard, or if the motherboard is fried but is still somehow able to power things like the case fan and the LED lights for my power button on the tower.

Is the only way to be sure to just get a new PSU and try it, or is there some way I can avoid doing that and save myself the expense if the motherboard itself is just dead.

If it helps, my motherboard is from an HP computer: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product...ent/c03132942/

    Thanks!

I just wanted to clarify that the PSU is powering things like the CPU fan and the hard drives/dvd drive, which is why it’s a bit confusing to me.

        Thanks!

Stock it comes with this basically:
        https://support.hp.com/ca-en/document/c03685096

I pulled out the hard drives I had and the GPU to see if it would turn on with as little as possible and use the onboard video, so right now it just has the stock RAM (12gb) and the Core i7 3770 with a Corsair CX600 PSU that I had swapped in years ago.

It doesn’t POST, so I can’t get into Windows unfortunately. It also doesn’t beep either, so I may be missing a POST error, or it’s not even getting that far.

I’m just confused because the motherboard seems to be providing some power to the case fan and the power button/hard drive LEDs, but could that still be a sign that the motherboard is dead?

Remove all RAM from the MB, keep the add on video card out, connect to the appropriate video port on the MB, power up then post back and let us know if you heard any error beeps.

Pulled out the ram and gave it a shot and still no POST.

I tried my old PSU just in case and it’s the same behaviour - it is powering on the MB enough to turn on the fans and the power button LED, but no display or post.

I think most signs are pointing to the motherboard at this point?

                Thanks.

you won’t hear any POST beeps if the motherboard doesn’t have an inbuilt speaker soldered onto the mobo (most don’t) or one that has been connected to the front panel header on the mobo itself.

so up until some short time ago, everything was working fine?
what’s changed - updates, software, hardware???

Ah so it could be POSTing but not displaying anything?

I opened it up to try to change out a hard drive, so I’m assuming moving it did something, but since it doesn’t seem to be displaying even with almost everything taken out (except the CPU) I just wasn’t sure what it could be.

OK, now we are getting somewhere.
That little gem could well indicate you knocked a cable out or lose.
                      so check all the connections.

what did you actually do when you tried changing out the drive, and did you go ahead with that?

Yeah I tried disconnecting and reconnecting almost everything that I could see, unless I somehow did something to the CPU which I haven’t pulled out because I don’t have any paste at the moment.

The hard drives are in a small cage that I had to pull out. I also had to lay the entire case down flat to be able to access the bay more easily.

very unlikely you did anything to the CPU, and of all the parts that fail, CPU’s are so rare I’ve only ever seen one fail in my 31 professional years.

maybe it’s time to post a few screenshots of the inards and maybe something will pop out.

Sure thing - here’s a view of the mobo (I hope it’s clear). I kept all the case cables connected, but that’s everything off except the RAM which I had slotted back in and the CPU as I had mentioned before.

Apologies for the delay getting back to you, working seven days a week leaving little to no time for the forum atm

A MB will not pass the power on self test (POST) if there is no RAM in the board so no POST was to be expected, what we were looking for was to see if you got any error beeps when there was no RAM in the board, if you get error beeps with no RAM in the board it normally suggests that things are ok up to the point that the RAM is tested and the problem is therefore after it, the graphics device is tested after the RAM so no screen + error beeps with the RAM removed commonly = graphics device failure.

If there are no error beeps with the RAM removed the two most common faults are a bad PSU or MB and in that order.

Looking at your picture, we can see that there is A: a BIOS error speaker and B&C neither of the two ATX power connectors are hooked up to the board.

Please advise as to whether or not the B & C connectors have been securely connected to the MB while you have been troubleshooting.
