    mal’,

Did as you suggested - all done with success, at last!!! No traces of Bitdefender left.
Desktop is a bit crowded - do I just delete all files.
Any idea as to why as the administrator, I could not delete the folder?

Should I go for Avast or is Windows Defender good enough?

You can, or this tool will delete all the tools we used.

Because there were elements of the antivirus that were running. You would need to remove them in safe mode. This is honestly the hardest time I’ve ever had removing anything from a computer. The tools we used should have nuked them instantly. I’m actually going to install Bitdefender then try and remove it using the methods I had you do, and see what the deal is; curious as to why it would not go…

I’d say windows defender is good enough. So long as you do not open any emails that you do not know where they are from. Don’t click on any ads and watch what you download you should be fine. If you do decide to download something check it at virus total before opening it on your machine. Avast has become a bit spammy, used to be good but I wouldn’t use it.

I’d use unchecky to make sure that nothing you download comes with anything extra.
Also, Ublock Origin to enjoy ad free browsing.

      Ublock origin Chrome.
      Ublock Origin FireFox.
      Ublock Origin Opera.

        You’re a diamond.
My sincere thanks for all your efforts.
I’m sorry you had to work so hard, but you/we got there in the end - you must have got very exasperated.

Any other recommendations for free Antivirus apart from Defender (light on resources)?

I’m gonna figure out why it wasn’t removing and post what need to happen to get those files to leave, so it helps someone in the future…

I like this one personally. You get a year for free. You can also leave windows defender running.
CatchPulse (previously SecureAPlus) for home devices offers personalised malware protection WITHOUT forcing you to become a cybersecurity expert. Using AI, it detects malware that is usually unnoticed.
