Internet connection shuts down as soon as I open certain videogames

Good day,

it’s my first time writing here and I hope it works, because I really am not sure where else to turn. I have recently started experiencing internet connection issues on my laptop, when connecting to the home Wifi. Note - no one else has the same problem with the wifi on their laptop, so it is likely within my computer. When I try to play pretty much any game (so far it was tested on Muck, Baldur’s Gate and Overwatch), my computer stops being connected to the wifi (either says Connected, no Internet; or just isn’t connected at all). As soon as I close the games, the connection is restored.

This is not so much of a problem for solo games where I don’t rely on the internet, but it has prevented me from playing multiplayer with my friends - I was hoping someone here might have an idea how to fix it. It should be noted that it only happens on my home wifi network, and using a mobile hotspot works. I have not tried an ethernet cable yet, as I want to avoid solutions that would make me tied to being near the router.

Thanks for any solution that people come up with.

As well as the speccy log, have you tried to set a static up?

This program works on windows 10 and 11. But it does not say it does.

I did set that up, but it didn’t work - as soon as I open Overwatch, i lose connection to the game server.

One issue seen here is that you have to small of a C drive.

Partition 1
Partition ID: Disk #0, Partition #1
Disk Letter: C:
File System: NTFS
Volume Serial Number: 542C22AA
Size: 96 GB
Used Space: 89 GB (93%)
Free Space: 6.29 GB (7%)

This is because Windows requires on average 30% to 35% free space including 32 GB free space for updates, 7-10 GB reserved for future proofing on the C drive.

This is not including and limited to what the system uses for backups, swap page and hibernate files.

Another is the DNS while great for security for browsing we pages have lately seen more and more issues when gaming.

Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX201 160MHz
IP Address: 192.168.178.214
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway server: 192.168.178.1

DNS Server: 8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

Showing that you have and or have had a VPN installed called Tunnel Bear if that is disabled does the issue clear up at all?

That is probably true - when I got this laptop I partitioned the C drive to make it tidier for my game downloads, but it looks like I took too much space from it. I’m not really sure how to revert it, since shrinking the D drive at the moment results in unallocated space that I cannot use to expand the C drive with.

As far as Tunnelbear goes, the issue precedes the installation of the VPN - although I still tried to uninstall it right now, but I still have the same issue.

Post a screen sot of Disk Management.

If the unallocated space is not after C drive, then it will not work.

This is how it looked like at first - afterwards
I shrunk the D drive to get some additional space, but the unallocated space came on the right side of the D drive - so you’re right when you say that it was not next to C. Either way, shrinking D only gave me 9GB anyway, which is probably not enough even if I could add it to C. I’m not sure how else to clear up C drive, since I don’t recognize most of the files in there or understand their functions.

Also, uninstall all vpn software with geek uninstaller.

After uninstalling the software, reboot the computer.

Then reset your network settings to default.

If you're suffering network problems in Windows 10 that you just can't seem to fix, the Windows 10 Anniversary Update now includes a feature that lets you reset your network back to how it was when you first installed Windows.

Reboot again.

Alright, so I did both of those. The network reset did restart my laptop, but didn’t really do much else. I was still connected to the same wifi as before, and I thought it’s supposed to forget all passwords so I just followed the instructions here to do it manually: Network Reset Not Working? Try These Fixes - Tech News Today .

Still the same issue. I keep testing it on Overwatch, and while it lets me go into the game, as soon as I try to start matchmaking (and connecting to other players I guess), it throws me out. BG3 does the same.

I’ll check the logs when I return home from work.

Prior to starting your game please run this tool.

Download and run KillEmAll
Unzip it to your desktop.
Right click run As admin.
This will kill all non essential processes.
Including your browser, so save anything you are working on prior to running the tool.
Let us know if there is any change in the issue after using killemall.
Do not reboot after using this tool, it is a temporary tool to kill non windows processes to see if that is an issue.
