Slow Upload Speeds

Hello,

I’ve been measuring my upload speed over the last few weeks across multiple websites that provide speed tests, and have found that my upload speed on a recently built computer has been fairly low. It is under 1 Mb/s. My download speed is fantastic, and I have no problems with that, but my upload speed is consistently around that 1 Mb/s mark. On the contrary, a laptop I use that is connected to the same network can reach 200 MB/s upload speed, so I don’t believe that my router is at fault. Just testing my phone now, and it was able to reach 500 MB/s. The router is one of the newer ones and this newly built computer is the only one having issues.

I don’t live in a densely populated area, so the channel my router uses is fine. My laptop and computer share the same DNS. I use a 5.0 GHz as a preferred band, since my computer is close to the router. At most 4 devices is connected to the network. Google thinks that the router is at fault here across the board but if that was the case, then I would think that multiple devices would be affected.

Any advice would be appreciated. Let me know if you need any more information. Also, feel free to question any of the above as well and I’ll double check.

Lastly, expect slow response times. This is not of urgency to me.

Been seeing a lot of post stating the same thing and they all have one thing in common Verizon FIOS.

Besides what Mal has suggested what have you tried?

Could also be a possibility that with the Hurricanes that are hitting land now may have an effect on services.

I will be looking at the provided guide tomorrow when I have more free time. Although I am noticing that it does say that it only increases up to 10Mbps, which won’t be close to the 500Mbps that my phone was getting.

It does so happen that I do have Verizon, so I will take a look at that link as well. Do you think that even though only this computer is affected, resetting my router could still possible resolve the issue?

I honestly haven’t tried too much as I am a bit stumped, and don’t really want to play around with my router unless I have a good reason to. I like to know how things work. The only thing I have tried is reinstalling my drivers for WiFi, though maybe I should check if there are any known issues with it.

I also don’t think the hurricanes are involved because I have been monitoring this for weeks.

I also tried other browsers and a virtual machine (Hyper-V) and I am getting similar upload speeds.

I’ll also mention that the WiFi antenna came with the motherboard and it is one of those antennas that you screw into the two shiny things (don’t remember what they are called).

Do not know could be that resetting the modem might help compared to resting the network setting back to a factory state could help.

Like with any issue it can sometimes be a process of elimination.

As far as the antenna I have the same type, so I fully understand what you are stating.

Have you tested a second user account to see if the same issue happens?

Changing from 5 Ghz to 2.4 Ghz?

Gone into the WiFi on the affected system removed the connection and the recreated it.

For Windows 10
Go into Network & Internet
On the left select Wi-Fi
On the right Click Manage Known Networks
Now you should see list of WiFi networks that you have connected to select the affected one
Click Forget

Readd the WiFi connection like you did before.

There is a development.

So I figured to check the if cabling was alright such should be the first step to anything really, and I noticed that one of the antenna cables was endlessly spinning as I tightened it. I removed both of them to check for physical damage but they looked alright. I tightened both of them back up with the same result. Visually, it looks okay, but I wasn’t sure. I also noticed that my download speed tanked from 500 Mbps to under 200 Mbps (no idea how I managed that). I also noticed as I tightened it by hand, that I was having some weird resistance on one of the ports. I switched the cables so the cables are fine, but I’m afraid that one of the ports may be damaged.

I then plugged in another WiFi antenna that I use for my laptop cause the WiFI card in that thing is all messed up, and the upload speed was around 200 Mbps on this computer. The download speed was also around the same as with the antenna , so I am going to really hope that this is like a one-time thing because losing 300 Mbps on download speed would suck, since I’m mostly downloading things anyway.

I able to switch between antennas and there is a difference.

All in all, I think I will have to buy a WiFI PCIe card or something because I need the USB antenna one for my laptop.

Unless you guys have any other thoughts on this.

It sounds like there is a clicking sound when I try to wrench the antenna cable that is spinning.

Not sure why my download speed tanked. 200Mbps is still pretty good, but I liked it when it was great. Phone shows 500 Mbps, so I don’t think the router is having a bad day.

In case this is confusing. Results are below:

Antenna that came with motherboard:
Download: 150 Mbps (Expected 500 Mbps, as it was that high when I made the original post)
Upload: 1 Mbps (Expected more than 1 Mbps)

Antenna USB adapter for my laptop:
Download: 200 Mbps (I think this is capped)
Upload: 200 Mbps

I just want someone to confirm that a new PCIe WiFi card will be a good idea (looks like I can get one for 20 bucks). Unless there’s something I can do troubleshoot this.

It seems that this would be a good solution for you. Since you are getting better speeds with a USB Dongle.
