Laptop monitor won't come on after sleep

Hi all,

Bit of an odd one here. My dad has a HP 14-bp076sa running Windows 10. On a regular basis (but not consistently) the monitor doesnโ€™t come on after it has been asleep. It happens both when itโ€™s been put to sleep, or gone to sleep by itself, and seems to be unrelated to whether or not the lid is closed at any point during this process.

And it really isnโ€™t coming on, no backlight or anything, not amount of key pressing, or putting the machine back to sleep, or opening and closing the screen resolves the issue. However, as soon as I plug in an external monitor the screen pops back on. Iโ€™m not seeing any flickering etc that suggests there is a loose connection - itโ€™s like windows forgets there is a screen it should be turning on.

Otherwise the machine is fine, it is rarely used for anything other than light browsing and is actually quite nippy for itโ€™s specs and age. Iโ€™ve tried reinstalling the graphics drivers and there doesnโ€™t seem to be anything relevant in the Event Viewer.

Have any of you got any suggestions as to a fix?

Sorry but as per the PCHF Terms and rules that we each agreed to abide by when becoming a member;
1. PCHF will not offer assistance on behalf of other people. This is for security reasons. This means someone posting and asking for assistance for someone else is not permitted

You need to borrow the computer so that you have it in front of you, not against forum rules that way

Honestly, I think thatโ€™s being a little bit pedantic.

Iโ€™m not asking on behalf of someone else, Iโ€™m asking for assistance for myself so I can fix it. Iโ€™d say it was reasonably clear from the first person narrative, and details of the troubleshooting laid out in the initial post, that I have access to the machine.

However, I can confirm that my father has now generously gifted the broken laptop to me.

Think what you wish but the alternative was the thread being locked, feel free to take it up with the site owner who wrote the rules and as rules we are all obliged to abide by them.

Download then run Speccy ( free ) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

A potential problem is the 4GB of RAM;
Physical Memory
Memory Usage: 86 %

Something is using up most of the RAM which is were data is stored while the computer is sitting idle, this is meant to be so that when you click on the computer in any way you are meant to be looking at the screen as it was when left, lack of memory means that there is nowhere for the said data to be stored.

As a starting point, couple of suggestions, one to clean the slate settings wise and one to lower demand on the memory.

Follow all the steps stated by HP here
Antivirus
Avast Antivirus
Antivirus: Enabled
Virus Signature Database: Up to date
Windows Defender
Antivirus: Enabled
Virus Signature Database: Up to date

Having more than one AV or Firewall installed on your computer is bad, it will slow down the computer, cause internet connection problems and leave you with no AV protection at all if they cancel each other out as they fight for resources.

Windows 8, 8.1, 10 and 11 come with an improved Windows Defender, it offers the same real-time anti-virus/anti-malware protection as Microsoft Security Essentials. Windows Defender also shares the same malware signature definitions as Microsoft Security Essentials, and Forefront Endpoint Protection. Technically, Microsoft Security Essentials has not been renamed Windows Defender, or combined with it in Windows 8, 8.1, 10 and 11.

If any AV product that you have is a paid for version you should always make sure that you have a copy of the product key kept somewhere safe just in case you ever wish to reinstall it.

You can uninstall Avast in the Control Panel but should you have any problems see Avast clean removal info here Please create a new system restore point first.

Yourself and your Dad may want to take a look at the following news article Avast admits to โ€˜unacceptableโ€™ sharing of user data: what you need to know

When Avast has been correctly uninstalled, check to see if Windows Defender is enabled and allow it to update and carry out a full scan of your computer.

Once done, restart, test by using the computer as you normally would, post back with an update when you are ready,please include a new Speccy url with your update.

You revisited the forum but left no reply, do you still require assistance or is the issue now resolved, an update would be appreciated.
