    Working fine?

    Hello, I recently acquired a used desktop with W10 Pro which I was told was ‘working fine’ and would make a ‘good home computer’.

    The reason I took it was because the back is exactly the same as my existing tower, so I would be able to connect all leads easily without taxing my very moderate techie knowledge. In fact the only plug-in that was different was the monitor which went at the bottom rather than the side.

    Once connected I discovered quite a few glitches and wonder if somehow these are a result of something I have done. This seems unlikely, as I really have done very little, but it seems to me that they certainly don’t allow the pc to be described as ‘working fine’.

    Glitches are:

    It won’t highlight for C&P, or in the address bar to allow deletion.

    When trying to install (Chrome, for example) the ‘allow or not changes’ window is very temperamental. It usually won’t allow yes to be clicked, although does occasionally and randomly.

    When trying to put an address in the bar it adds letters - such as outlooklook.comutlook.com, or it adds another URL. This is on Edge, Chrome and Avast.

    There’s ‘jumping around’ in some situations. For example, in Chrome Settings at ‘start a new page’, ‘use current pages’, ‘resume where left off’, clicking any results in ‘select’ jumping around all three.

    Also, when my wife tries to look at enlarged photos on Facebook, they, too, jump around, so to speak.

    Resolution is quite poor. I’ve tried changing it, but doesn’t appear to have made any difference. May be the monitor or cable as had similar problem with existing desktop? Or the card, graphics card is it?

    It’s described as silver build, whatever that is, is W 10 Pro with specs DDR2 4GB ram, 500gb HHD, Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz (4CPUs)

    Sorry, quite a lot there, but any thoughts, in simple language please, most welcome.

    Hi Because the PC is second hand I’d suggest resetting the PC and then reinstall the apps you want to use… info on reset PC here Recovery options in Windows - Microsoft Support easy to do and should iron out any bugs after installed and updated

        Hello, I’ve been - am trying - to reset, but getting stuck every time at something called something like Verifying DMI Pool Data, so no further forward, I’m afraid.

          Try restoring the default factory settings in the BIOS + while in the BIOS make sure that the HDD is the first device in the boot order, you should also make sure that you do not have any USB type storage devices in the computer when you try to do the reset.

          If the above does not help any, post back with your MB, PSU and any add on video card brand and model name or number, if you need to open the case up to get the information, see the additional info below;

          [COLOR=rgb(226, 80, 65)]The following checks require the computer case to be opened so take the following safety precautions 1st, disconnect the power cord from the wall socket and take anti static precautions before touching anything inside, you can do this by touching a bare metal part of the case or PSU or if a notebook by touching a household radiator or associated copper feed pipe, press the case power button for twenty seconds or so to get rid of any residual charge in the system.

          Remove and reseat the RAM to ensure that it has a good contact.

          Remove and reseat any add on GPU or other cards for the same reason as above.

          Make sure that all internal connections are securely attached to the HDD, optical drive and cooling fans etc.

          Reassemble, test and then post back with an update for us.[/COLOR]

              We can walk you through it if it would help or do you have someone closer to home that can help you.

              Resetting the BIOS defaults is pretty straight forward.

                        Sorry for the delay. I have twice tried to reset the pc and twice been told ‘there was a problem resetting your pc, no changes were made’. I then tried without the reset USB, no change, the same issues. Then, the last time I turned on, just a black screen!

                          First, sorry for occasional appearance, and am off again until next Tuesday or Wednesday (for the last time this year!). However, I’m not ignoring it and have tried a number of times to actually get to something that might take me forward. But either get black screen, then just ‘works’ (small white-dotted circle just keeps going round!), then might get to login page eventually, but no further and no ‘repair’ links. Actually tried installing tool again and starting from scratch, but, again, dead end. This time I got to ‘go to settings to activate windows’ on a black screen, but just keeps ‘working’ again, as in small blue circle. Think I may be past the point of rescue!

                            Just so that you know, you reset Windows from within Windows and as mentioned in my reply #5 no USB with or without Windows on it should have been in the computer.

                            We need to know the version of Windows that the computer had when you received it, never heard of any silver version of Windows but have heard of Windows 10 S, you wouldnt legally get this on a computer that has DDR2 RAM as it only comes with new computers.

                            The above can be either hardware or software related so at some point we need you to be able to follow the steps as post in my reply #5.
