    Windows 10 fails to update

    Hi.

Been putting up with this for some time now and itโ€™s getting a bit much. Continually telling me I need an update but if I try it tends to result in a failure and says it will try again later. For example Iโ€™m now looking at an error message that shows Error code: (0x80073712).

Iโ€™d copy & paste the (top of the) update history, but it seems that MS doesnโ€™t want me to even highlight that text.

(I did wonder if it was connected with the changes I had to make to turn the connection into a metered one in order to control downloads; but that worked well long after I made that change, so that seems unlikely.)

I did try to find a solution on the Net but didnโ€™t manage to fix it, which is why Iโ€™m putting up with it, but Iโ€™d appreciate info on how to sort it if anyone has a fix.

    Cheers.

Well the trouble shooter seemed familiar so no surprise that, that didnโ€™t solve the issue.

The first part of the DISM seemed to go ok, but the second part failed.

Still have problems on trying to update due to โ€œSome update files are missing or have problemsโ€

Will try the reset in a while but somewhat concerned it may ask for a DVD when 10 was obtained via MSโ€™s free update offer. Just have to hope the Win7 disk works if it asks for one. (Need to go dig it out from wherever.)

Suddenly most unkeen. Says it will remove apps (I assume it means executable programmes) and settings, after I spend an age minimising what MS noses at. Is there no alternative which actually fixes whatever is stopping the update rather than mess up all the changes Iโ€™d have to find and do again on the off chance it might do something useful ?

You can download an windows 10.iso from Download Windows 10
a Quick fix from that webpage is update windows which you wont loose any data of software but it will write a full install of 10

                Thanks.
Update windows took seconds. Iโ€™m unconvinced it has done anything other than put up a โ€œthank youโ€ screen.
Maybe Iโ€™ll continue putting up with the issue.
                Thanks for trying.

Unfortunately not. As mentioned I didnโ€™t fancy trying this reset if it was going to removed stuff rather than fix the error. It took me a long time to change the settings to minimise MSโ€™s control of my PC. I didnโ€™t see a reference to an iso file, and trying the โ€œUpdate Nowโ€ button quickly came up with a โ€œthank youโ€ screen and nothing else, so I took it that it didnโ€™t do anything. Certainly nothing much changed, and I lost heart.

No youโ€™ve got me to look at it again maybe it is the โ€˜download toolโ€™, rather than .iso, that I need, so maybe Iโ€™ll see what that does.

                      Ok thanks for the update.
Also some older appโ€™s are not compatible with Win 10.

Ok this is really Samuria,s case however I will at least pop on and try and help until he gets here.

Firstly upgrading to Windows10 I did not loose any apps, nor do I loose any files,my settings stayed the same, etc etc.

However Vger is right, some older apps no longer run in Windows10,however some apps can be update for free so they are able to run in Windows10.

But you either want old apps and the issues still remain or upgrade to Windows10 and maybe thats maybe one or two apps will not run.

Now the link you were given for the ISO by Samuria ISO file If you read the page and instructions fully you will note it has a blue button Download Tool Now this is to make the ISO file that he suggested. The instructions are there to explain How To.

Samuria is really good at what he does and I would certainly follow his advice.

                        I hope this helps.

                        JB.

Iโ€™m already using 10 and the problem is with it failing to install the upgrades, and continually pestering me to download them again; so not really an upgrade for me, more a desperate attempt to sort out whatever is wrong.

Overnight I managed to install the .iso file to a disk, so that part is already done. However it is unlikely Iโ€™ll find time to try anything further until Tuesday earliest.

(To be honest Iโ€™m also starting to get Internet issues, which although itโ€™s a separate issue Iโ€™ll describe in case anyone has any ideas. 2 symptoms, a) noise on the phone line that Iโ€™ve narrowed down to being caused when the internet cable is connected to the splitter/filter because it goes when it is pulled out, and b) slow and occasional failure of net pages to load. Since this is recent and the download issue above long term Iโ€™m doubting that the two problems are connected. Changing the splitter/filter into which I plug the internet cable doesnโ€™t help, changing the cable from the modem to the stripper/filter doesnโ€™t help, changing the cable from the PC to the modem doesnโ€™t help, changing the modem doesnโ€™t help, removing the face plate on the main phone socket and plugging it directly doesnโ€™t help. Iโ€™m figuring either something has gone kaput in the wiring inside the home, or I have to risk BT charging me a fortune for checking their side out and then claiming itโ€™s nothing to do with them.)

Ok reading the rest of Samuria,s link it states to backup files and reinstall windows using the ISO file you made. Now you could do that by following the instructions and you wouldnt loose any files, data as you would be backingup first, again this shouldnt change any settings etc of your computer.
Or I can see if staff will PM him and seeif he can advise you further, that maybe the best option.

Oh BT,I am sorry but they are a disgrace,Im glad I managed to get rid of them. You can ring BT to check the line, resend the signal see if that helps. But I would not hold my breath.I had similar issues at a different home, all down to BT,they could not fix the crackling noise and less than half a meg speed.
Virgin,Sky I may of been able to advise you,you have done all the tricks BT often tells us to do.Your computer issues could be part of the problem.
                            Have you tested your speed?
Try this and post results: SpeedTest.
