Ok returned to this one. As mentioned, the update now button at Download Windows 10 merely downloads a file (Windows10Upgrade9252.exe) which when run simply checks for updates, that then immediately thanks me for updating to the latest version. But this has to be nonsense as I still get the pop-up telling me I need to update at regular intervals yet trying to do so results in the install error message mentioned.

Not overly familiar with how one uses the .iso but Iโ€™ll click it and hope Windows mounts and runs it ok.

Unsure what to make of it. Took from around 11 am to 7 pm to go through the whole cycle, including any new updates it found after the first installation. Having checked for updates it started downloading and installing what it found without awaiting my permission, so something has definitely changed, as I feared it might be. Iโ€™ll now have to re-look for how to edit the registry to set a metered account, which was what was providing a button to ask whether to download the updates.

Too soon to tell if it has fixed the update problem. For sure it said that there had been a problem downloading the Nvidia update, but when I checked for updates again it didnโ€™t mention it; but said it was all up to date ?! I have no idea what to make of that. At last it didnโ€™t complain about the MS update.

(Maybe Iโ€™ll leave looking at the phone noise problem tomorrow. Been a long day at this already. Iโ€™ve borrowed anotherโ€™s modem but no doubt will have to try to discover what my username/password is to the ISP to connect as the one they have already set wonโ€™t be the same.)

Hi. Well it is difficult to say. I think it probably is, at least the main issue I put in the OP. For sure after the reinstall of Windows 10 it then updated fine; but that was an exceptional situation being part of the reinstall. Iโ€™d prefer for the PC to have gone through a separate update to be sure. But thanks for getting me this far.

(As far as the side issue I mentioned, the BT engineer (or should I say Openreach engineer) arrived, but the issue had been recorded as no dialtone (?!?!?!?!?) so they had allocated a phone engineer who could only test the line from the telephone perspective, and who said he could not test the broadband part as that needed an engineer trained in broadband. So nothing much has happened, and Iโ€™m still waiting for BT to get back with apologies and arrange a further visit so that they can do their job properly.)

Ok..so do you want this thread to stay open/put on hold for a while, until you hear from BT?

That would be useful thanks. Iโ€™m unsure anyone here will have suggestions on the phone/bb issue really, but it may give time for MS to come up with another update.

It seems MS are not so keen to update again recently, which is disappointing.

However on the supplementary issue of the Net connection, if I may ask a related question โ€ฆ

Iโ€™ve had a second engineer visit who tested the broadband and whilst he didnโ€™t find a specific cause, rewired and changed terminals both in the hall and under the eaves outside anyway to try to eliminate issues with them, after which the phone noise level seemed extremely low. But of course, these issues are rarely continuous and whilst the call noise is now much reduced I do think it was worse in the evening. But the more relevant thing is that the Net continues to drop out.

Iโ€™m not noticing as much as I might as most of the day, if Iโ€™m on the PC it can well not be Web related stuff Iโ€™m doing. But last night and again this morning Iโ€™ve had the broadband drop on a number of occasions, and take a frustratingly long time to get back up. Iโ€™ve previously tried different splitter/filters. Iโ€™ve tried 3 different modem/routers. Iโ€™ve tried 3 different sets of cables. I think it has to be fair to say Iโ€™ve ruled out an issue with any of them, or at least after all that Iโ€™d hope so. Soโ€ฆ can a PC keep kicking off the connection, even if the PC is simply on, and I am using the mobile or the tablet to communicate ?

Iโ€™m unsure if any of my old PCs in the garage (I must get around to slinging them) will even work/connect, should I take the trouble of digging them out and connecting them. But Iโ€™m getting desperate to find a single point of error. BT/Openreach have not mentioned any charge yet but Iโ€™m not wanting to find the issue is still with my equipment rather than theirs. I think I may turn off the PC tonight and go surf in bed using the tablet and see if it still fails, but I thought Iโ€™d ask in case someone knew whether an โ€œidleโ€ PC can bring down the modem / Net link; anyway.

                  Cheers

Meanwhile, looking from the other side, Iโ€™ve turned off WiFi on the mobile, tablet, and the smart TV; rebooted the PC, and closed most of the browser tabs. Will see if that changes anything.

And I no sooner paste that and I find the connection fails immediately afterwards. The only other tab I have open failed to update. Maybe coincidence but โ€ฆ

Broadband speeds are greatly affected by line noise, so if thereโ€™s lots of line noise, your speeds will be slow.

MS has delayed updates this month.

Thanks for the reminder; on checking I now see there is a malicious software removal tool update and a security update. Iโ€™ll give it a try.

Meanwhile the call line seems better, but not great nor consistent. Late at night the background noise is still there but at a much lower level. And the broadband connection drop-outs seem to have gone, although some videos do keep pausing. Iโ€™d put that down to the replaced connections but for the fact that I did still got a few drops after the connections were replaced; but none for days now. I feel it is likely they found a network/exchange fault since the visit, and changed something.

Ah it seems to have worked. I think Samuriaโ€™s suggestions for reloading Win 10 has fixed it. Thanks to all of you who posted; I believe this can be assigned the fixed status now. Cheers.
