I'm probably biased against Linux, but image the backlash Microsoft would additionally get if they offered 73 'flavours' of Windows!

Linux's appeal is that it's not Windows and the initial decision for a new potential customer is to offer them an overwhelming choice to pick from, all with different pro's and cons.
