Hello everyone,

Let me start off by saying I don't know much about computers. I bought a new gaming laptop a few days ago, the MSI Katana GF66 and was promised it could play games like Smite very well.

I took it home and was having no problems, everything was beautiful and smooth, then shut down... next day it was having a stuttering problem. Gave up, shut down, next day it was back to being perfect again. Shut down, next day we are back to square one with the stuttering.

I have 10 more days to return the laptop if there is something wrong with the hardware, but to me since it was working fine before it makes me think that the hardware is fine.

I was hoping someone could walk me through step-by-step to help me diagnose the problem because my games are currently unplayable as they require quick turning and reaction speed (the problem seems to be most noticeable when I turn the camera). It seems to be everything, not just games that has the stuttering problem (I sometimes even notice it on GIFs and scrolling web pages). I am currently using the Nvidia Control Panel "spinning Nvidia logo" to gauge whether or not I'm having the problem because it is easily visible on that spinning logo--no need to even boot up a game.

Intel Core i7 11th Gen 11800H 2.3 GHz Processor
15.6" 1920x1080 Full HD IPS 144Hz Display
16GB DDR4-3200 RAM
1TB Solid State Drive
Nvidia GeForce RTX3060, 6GB
Windows 10

The issue is there even after booting it up after being off over night. However, sometimes if I hit RESTART, the problem is GONE after restart.

I was hoping to try a series of fixes recommended by the community. I'm desperate.

Remove Norton from your machine. With geek Uninstaller.

Norton Security - 22.22.3.9

Then Run the Norton Removal Tool.

Disable windows 10 spyware with O&O software, this can chew up bandwidth while you game as microsoft is constantly uploading various data from your machine.

Disable windows update, and only enable it once a week to update on your terms not whenever microsoft feels you need an update.

Uninstall Useless to you windows apps with O&O App buster.

Open a notepad and copy the content of the code box below, paste into open notepad and save it to your desktop as clean.bat then right click on clean.bat and run as admin.

Note: Do not copy the word code.

Note: This batch will reboot your machine so close anything you are working on and save it.

Code:
@echo off
netsh advfirewall reset
netsh advfirewall set allprofiles state On

For the Norton Removal Tool: Do I "Remove and Reinstall (Default)" or "Remove Only (Advanced)"

Remove Only (Advanced)

It's a resource hog, and the average user needs nothing more than windows defender and a little common sense. :)

Please update either way. Also, if you are going to game on a laptop, you need a cooling pad hands down without question.:)
Its happening again right now. I know if I restart it will fix the problem but I wanted to find out if there was anything else I should do first.

I checked my task manager I do not see ANYTHING that is consuming a significant amount of resources.

Update:

I Shut Down, did not fix the problem
I restarted, did NOT fix the problem.

Is this a hardware issue? Should I return the laptop? I only have a few more days

Update #2:

Progress! It seems like I can make the problem go away (or 95% go away) if I OPEN THE LID of the laptop (looking at both the laptop screen and my monitor screen, both are able to play games fine). If I close the lid, the problem comes back as soon as the monitor readjusts.

This might make some sense because I have to open the lid to hit the power button to turn my PC back on after shut-down.

Still, I don't know what the problem is or how to fix it, since this shouldn't be happening and is only a clue.

Edit: My friend said this wasn't likely the issue, it just means the graphics card is working at lower resolution and isn't going through as much demand so the problem goes away.

Me: But does that really cause that much of a difference? I'm only going from 1900x1080 (laptop) to 1900x1200 by switching to the monitor... maybe he is wrong?

And plus, closing the laptop lid, and then changing the resolution of the monitor to 1900x1080 does NOT fix the problem. Yet opening the lid does.

I’d say just return it, while it’s still under warranty.

Perform a factory reset prior to returning.

Your laptop has a 144Hz screen, but it looks as though the monitor is only 60Hz, this can cause stutters and inconsistencies. Try using only your laptop screen.

Sometimes it can! Computers do so much without us telling them anything, it is not unheard of for different sized screens or ones with different resolutions/refresh rates to confuse them.

Plug your computer in whenever you game, you will most likely see fluctuations and the like if it's not.

As for what your friend said:
You have a computer far past sufficient for Smite, I would think you can run a dozen screens before it's an issue, but this once again is under the theory that they are identical.

Reactions: Malnutrition
I will return the computer and get the same make/model. When looking up the make/model of the laptop I dont see this problem, so I should be okay getting the same computer right?

If the new computer has the same problem, I can revisit this thread and make a new post?

Surething to both questions; although we close threads here after a while. So you may need to send a staff member a private message. We will leave this open for a few days tho. I still suggest doing the factory reset, that way they can not try to blame you for this or that....

Alright, I now have the NEW laptop. Same make, model, etc.

I turn it on, and did absolutely nothing except change options in power settings "When lid is closed: Do Nothing"

The issue is still there. As always, once the issue stops it SEEMS random as to when it will occur again

-I have tried 2 HDMI cables and 2 different external monitors
-I have installed nothing on the new computer
-Things that resolve the issue: having the laptop screen on
-I notice the issue when: I either have "Project to external monitor only" on (with lid open or closed, doesnt matter) OR when I have "Duplicate Screen" projection on, and then close the laptop lid (NOTE: when I close the laptop lid on this setting, it reverts to only detecting one monitor. Thus it can't do "duplicate" anymore and reverts to "this PC screen only" and also changes the resolution to the external monitor resolution
-Things that DO NOT fix the issue: changing the resolution manually, uninstalling programs, stopping background processes
-Random ways the issue resolved: 1) I disabled integrated graphics through device manager (while the laptop lid was closed and it was having the problem, aka only one monitor was detected) 2) Just now, while experiencing the issue, my screen randomly turned black and my desktop appeared to reload itself. The issue was gone after the reload

Please help! I have no idea what is going on or why T_T
