You did it correctly. FMRS cleared the relevant event viewer log.

Do this one next:

  1. Type in: cmd and press ENTER
  2. Type in: sfc /scannow
  3. Press ENTER
This command usually takes a while as well, especially if it finds items to repair. Let me know how it goes

Last command I'd like you to try to get to run, This is the one that FRST hung up for 60 minutes before. Let me know how it goes:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Then, rescan with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and attach new FRST and Addition.txt logs. This time, however, please put a check mark in 'List BCD' prior to scanning

That was one of the original fixes, which ran to completion this time :)

Give me an update on how the computer is running

Also, please press the Scan button while FRST64.exe is open. This will generate the FRST and Addition.txt files for you.
 
The logs are clean. Continue with the following checks on your hardware

ListChkdskResult by SleepyDude

  • Download ListChkdskResult and save it to your Desktop
  • Right click on the file and select Run as administrator
  • Copy and paste the contents of the ListChkdskResult.txt report in your reply

  • Download GSmartControl for Windows - Portable and save it to your desktop
  • Right click on gsmartcontrol.zip icon and select Extract All... then Extract
  • Double click on the gsmartcontrol folder
  • Right click on gsmartcontrol.exe (not .manifest) and select Run as administrator
  • Allow the program to search for and list your hard drive(s)
  • Double click your drive C: drive
  • Go to the Self-tests tab
  • Make sure that the Test Type is set to Short Self-test
  • Click the Execute button
  • After the test completes, click the View Output button and copy and paste the contents in your reply

Please download, install and run SeaTools for Windows. Run the Short Drive Self Test and skip any repairs, for now. Report the results in your reply
 
Ok, could be a bad solid state drive if SeaTools gives a fail on it. I advise gathering the data you need from it now and replacing it when you can.
 
Would you mind testing your RAM with Memtest86? I'm starting to think the HDD isn't bad. Most scans show it's fine. I do think it's hardware related at this point though.

I think that test may be over my skill level--and I don't have a USB. I'm thinking I should just buy another computer. Do you have any recommendations for the hardware I should look for?
 
Hi, I understand you're probably wanting a faster solution than this. Are you willing to try this as a troubleshooting step since we can't test the memory?

Uninstall these:

  6. Microsoft Edge (HKLM-x32\...\Microsoft Edge) (Version: 131.0.2903.146 - Microsoft Corporation)
  7. Mercury Desktop Supporting Applications (HKLM-x32\...\{22212DEF-8B2B-4620-8230-A441F8F467C4}) (Version: 1.00.0008 - a la mode, inc.)

Suggesting this because your event viewer logs show errors regarding these applications. I understand you may need them. So perhaps, just seeing if they temporary resolve the issues you are experiencing after uninstalling each and then rebooting the system. If there are settings you can export before hand, I would suggest exporting those too so you can use them for the reinstall.

Thank you for all your help. I ordered a new computer with a solid state drive, as you recommended in an earlier post. My computer is 4 years old and it is time for an upgrade.
