Yes you can do that.

Lets check the temps and if the CPU gets to hot the system will shut its self off as a safety precaution to prevent damage form happening. The dust has been cleared put correct? Maybe about time to reapply the thermal paste.

Download Speedfan and install it. Once it's installed, run the program and post here any information it shows.

So that we have a comparison to Speedfan, download, run and grab a screenshot of HWMonitor (free).

To capture and post a screenshot;

Click on the ALT key + PRT SCR key..its on the top row..right hand side..now click on start...all programs...accessories...paint....left click in the white area ...press CTRL + V...click on file...click on save...save it to your desktop...name it something related to the screen your capturing... BE SURE TO SAVE IT AS A .JPG ...otherwise it may be to big to upload... after typing in any response you have... click on Upload a File to add the screenshot.

Screenshot instructions are provided to assist those that may read this topic but are not yet aware of the “how to”.
 
OK thanks. Will do that. I reapplied thermal paste when I changed the cpu cooler, when we had the initial overheating issues. It's not a cooler master evo. Will post up results etc later when I get home.
 
Sorry for the delay in replying. I have attached the screenshots as requested, although its at Idle. Should we now be thinking of stress testing the system. I was thinking of using Prime95, and I have used Furmark, before the HDD change, but that didn't cause the GPU to crash.
He did use the system last night with no issues, but I had moved the socket the surge protected extension cable plug's into, and also moved the homeplug internet connection to a different socket, just in case of power surges causing the issue.
It was completely fine when we tested on the kitchen table after the HDD change, so odd it started to play up back in his bedroom.

Also, forgot to ask, are there any log files I could use to try and see what component is falling over or which software processes are failing

May have been also the homeplugs need to be in the wall socket and not the surge protector.

Go ahead and rune the stress test and post back what the results are and monitor the temps and stuff under a load.

Where is the system located in the room? Does it get plenty of air circulation?
 
It's under his desk, plenty of room under there. The home plugs was already in a mains socket and not the surge protector. Could a surge through the home plug cause these issues.... Will run the load tests. He's currently using it, with no issues at the moment. Game he's playing usually crashed by now, but all ok. Not sure if I mentioned in my OP, but to get it to run ok in his old case with stock cooling, needed side off and a fan blowing at it, which it why I got a bigger case and aftermarket CPU cooler, as I was suspecting overheating. Will post results as soon as I can get system off him. Do you think bios corruption related or a red herring....

could have now that has been corrected things should be going smoother.

To access the logs.
1. Press the Windows + R button at the same time on your keyboard.
2. A Run Window should now appear, in this window type the following command eventvwr
3. Click on OK.

Look under Windows Logs
 
Hi its been running all day today, absolutely fine. I have posted up the Temps today. Also some events from the system windows logs, alot seem to be distributed COM warnings and 1 red error.
In the application log, there are alot of red events, some for distributed COM events, but a lot for volume shadow copy service errors.
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance. hr = 0x8007045b, A system shutdown is in progress.
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine QueryFullProcessImageNameW. hr = 0x80070006, The handle is invalid.
The time of these errors however do not correspond with the last crash on the 11th, which was about 7PM ish.

Not sure no if the BIOS thing was a glitch, and the HDD was the issue all along. Its been up for approx 7hrs today doing various things with no issues...

You can clear the logs and see if any new ones come up I have gotten those after a fresh install. Then run it for a few days recheck and they are not as many.

Windows usually self corrects its self and puts that in as a bookmark with notes.

You can also clear out the shadow copies and windows will rewrite them again and is constantly updating them.
 
Yeah, thinking back, the system wasn't connected to the internet during installation and for a good half hour after install. It's been running all day with no issues, in a reasonably hot room..... My suspicion is it was the hdd and a generally corrupted install of windows. Given the fact it's been running for a week with no issues after the bios corruption crash, makes me think it's solved, although when we switched cases and cooler, it ran fine for 2 weeks and then started freezing again Anyhow, I think we should mark as solved, and if starts to recur, I can open a new thread.
