Hi there,

Thank you for checking this post, I will provide any information that's requested as quick as I can as the help is very much appreciated!

I built my PC about 6 months ago, all new parts. I called the company I bought the parts from but they've stated that I need to send them the defective part and cannot supply the entire PC. During Covid they are not offering a repair service either so I'm kind of stuck.

-----------------

Yesterday I left my PC idle for an hour or so, nothing running apart from windows but when I returned it stated:
Black Screen - "Reboot and select proper device"

This confused me as I have an M2 onboard SSD with my OS installed so I restarted and entered the bios to check it was booting from the correct spot.

I have two options:
  1. (Windows boot installer) [SSD Name]
  2. [SSD Name]
If I select the SSD without (Windows boot installer) at the start of the name it states 'reboot and select proper device' again.

If I select the one with Windows Boot Installer at the start of the name it will just cut out after the MB Splash screen and then restart by cutting out completely and then turning itself back on - Although, on one occasion I got to the 'see advanced repair options' screen but after clicking that it cut out again and restarted, another time it actually made it to my desktop for around a second before it cut out again.

After cutting out I usually end up in a loop:
Turn on > Mother Board Splash Screen > Mother Board Might state 'attempting automatic repair' > Cuts out > Restarts

Thanks again!!!

Was the SSD cloned from a HDD Or did you clean install Windows onto it?
Have you run chkdsk on the SSD?
Powershell with admin & enter:
chkdsk C: /scan if this shows problems then enter:
chkdsk c: /r /scan /perf
Can you access Windows at all?
Was there any Windows update before the problem occurred?
Have you tried system restore?

I'm very sorry Bastet! I didn't get an email about this reply!

The SSD was a clean install via USB.

I'll admit I'm not clued up on Powershell but I did some reading and it seems you need to be logged into windows to use it?

No windows updates as far as I'm aware, got the majority within the first month or so and it's been around 6.

It definitely seems like it's 'cutting out' - could it be something as simple as a defective PSU?

I managed to dig out the list of hardware parts, hopefully it will shine some light.

Thanks again for all your assistance, it's VERY appreciated!

You can use the Windows installation media, boot with this & run the chkdsk cmds.
I’m still thinking that either it’s a hard drive problem or for some reason Windows has lost the boot partition/information.
Do you have any other drive connected when you receive this error? If yes then try disconnecting it & restarting.

Hi Bastet,

Once again, thank you so much for your assistance.

I tried to boot via windows and it shows the windows 10 logo and then restarts around 4 times.
On the 5th time it gets to the screen where you select languages(Windows setup) etc but before there's a chance to do anything it cuts out and repeats the entire process.

Out of frustration I did dig out another PSU and switched those but it's exactly the same issue.

I can't get to safe mode due to the MBs software either:
Gigabyte B450 AORUS ELITE AMD Motherboard

I'm at a complete loss :(

Just to confirm your other queries - I have a PSU, HDMI, Keyboard USB and Mouse USB connected. That is all.

Many thanks!

Can you try another hard drive?
Is the hard drive fully inserted/connected in the PC?
If a desktop can you try a different cable?
If you cannot boot from a USB drive then we can’t use any tools nor clean install Windows. It may be a MB fault.

Thank you Bastet! :)

It's an M2 Onboard SSD, I will try plugging in a HDD and give that a go.

If that doesn't work I'll send the motherboard back to the company and they will test and confirm if it's faulty.

I will update this thread once I have more info - thank you again! :)

Cheers,

Hi there!

YES! I got it working last night although I've been reading up about overlocking / tuning before turning it back on again.

I am posting this from the PC now though :D Woooo!

So to summarise...

After exiting bios and booting up using...
  • SSD it would go black / cut out and restart
  • Windows USB would restart after selecting CMD
  • Linux USB would cut out on the loading icon
I tried reseating everything, checked all the wires.
Tried a different PSU, GPU, RAM, HDD instead of SSD.
Replaced thermal paste, Removed the fans.
Moved the RAM sticks around and tried one on its own.
Taken the MB battery out and even updated the Bios but it still continued.

So after a bit of reading I decided to turn off 'core performance boost' under MIT on BIOS and changing the CPU clock ratio to 30.0 and IT WORKED!
I've then turned it on, got to windows, updated the chipset(although it did cut out once prior to updating) and reset the MIT settings to default.

Although I have to admit I didn't really know what I was doing but I've since googled my findings and it seems that other people have had similar issues with Gigabyte Motherboards and/or CPU(Ryzen 5). Still running okay now, it's been around an hour so fingers crossed!

My only question is, what does this all mean?
Was the CPU being over-volted and cutting out or could it be a MB issue?
Should I send my CPU back for testing even though it seems okay now?

Thanks again for all the help! I've learnt so much! :D

Hello mrmeow147,

Thanks for the update (y)

Computers can be fickle and can go off on a tangent for no reason and that is why I suggest that unless people have money to burn + previous OCing experience they should leave OCing alone.

Test your computer for a few days by using it as you normally would, create a new system restore point and definitely do not tinker with anything.

If all is still well after a couple of days, post back and we will check the system out for you before we consider marking your thread as solved.
