Dear pchelpforum

I'm having issues with my desktop as it started randomly freezing several weeks ago. This started happening after having had to replace my HDD that became corrupt, I then got an SSD. The pc freezes when using any program or even performing simple actions, from 2-15 seconds and then unfreezes. I have looked at countless Youtube videos and guides trying to solve it to no avail.
What I did however discover is that it's my drive that causes it, when a freeze occurred I'd have my task manager open to monitor it and as the pc froze I could see the drive usage percentage ramp up to a 100%, then fall back to its usual 3-10% and unfreeze. I tried as I said a bunch of things, such as disabling windows search, superfetch and much more. Those all didn't work so I reset my whole windows, wiping and reinstalling everything, and at first the issue seemed to be fixed, but it came back. Although, after resetting windows the drive percentage went to 50% and freezed instead of a 100, but now even task manager freezes. On the task manager it also doesn't show whether a certain program is causing it, as all the programs I'm using at the time never use more than .1MB/s when it occurs.

My specs are:
MB: Gigabyte B250-HD3P
CPU: I5-7400 3GHz
GPU: (Gigabyte) Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050Ti
RAM: 2x 4GB DDR4 Corsair Vengeance LPX 2400MHz
PSU: TS FXF (not entirely sure which model)

Can you try this command on an administrator command prompt?

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

press <enter> and let it run.

It may appear to slow down at around 40-50% but it will eventually complete.

I completed it, what's the next step?

Note: according to a friend the drive is pretty much done for, and I should get a new one...
I have already tried many things to fix it to no avail
 
The above-mentioned command was to test /repair possible errors in the Operating System.
The next possible cause of the issues you appear to have is the HDD.

Download CrystalDiskInfo and run it.

It may appear that it takes a bit longer to arrive at a probable culprit, but that is how the tracing of a defect is done.

Just an observation BitBork, you appear to have run CrystalDisk Benchmark as opposed to the requested CrystalDiskinfo, Benchmark does not provide the health status of the drive that georgeks has requested.

I am home for the weekend so have access to my desktop again, if it were possible to fix it that would be great yeah.

I am thinking of buying a new storage drive though, if a solution can't be found, but would like to save money.
 
This program usually does not run properly on SSD's I would suggest HD Tune Pro, but it is possible to not work properly too. You can try it will tell you directly the life condition. But if it is an phisical faliure it wouint say it because the software is accepting it. You have the worst choice of an SSD . If you buy cehap SSD's you should get an smaller size one not more than 120 GB's. If yoiu want bigger you shoudl spend more money. This is a common problem with SSD's specially chineese ones, because they dont test them and that is why they are cheap. This one is cheap..... so it is normally to by deffective one. If you have the possibility, replace it from the place you've got the SSD. PS I know that Kingston is an USA trademark, but still their things are made in china ;) Just like the Apple products ( with better quality ) :D :D :D

Edit: Small note: it seems the 100% usage freeze occurs more frequently the longer the pc has been on for, if that helps.

Edit: Well the firmware update literally took a second so I doubt anything significant was in it... It does say "a power cycle of the SSD is recommended", does that mean simply rebooting?

Kingston program says there is nothing wrong with it other than the temperature being a bit off, but there is a firmware update, so I'll try that.

I rebooted, will keep taskmanager open and use pc as normal, see if it still occurs.
 
Actually it shows you some problems indicated... SSd with 94 % Life?! I hope the firmware update to help you. But still be aware If that is true do not fill the eintire SSD up, keep the 20 Precent of free space so Windows can ignore the bad sectors and have space for virtual memory and relocating of files.
Tell me later what is the situation

So far, downloading a heavy game (BFV), playing another (CIV-VI) and having other programs open with no 100% freeze, seems that firmware update did some magic. (Let's hope I didn't jinx it now)

Will keep the 20% free space in mind. Thanks for the help!
