Remove Bitdefender and see what happens.
It's been crazy. In the last 24hours, my pc monitor ceased to work. Checked connections, checked cables etc. I now have a brand new Asus 21.5 inch monitor. I will monitor the situation over the next few days. If it occurs again, I will remove Bitdefender. But clearly, there was an issue with the previous monitor.

Just had another crash - error message "Failed: bdprivmon.sys which upon investigation is developed by BitDefender. Have now totally removed BitDefender. Will monitor to see if the problem continues. Phew!

Any new information
No further freezes since removing BitDefender. Is it the case that the built-in Windows Defender security is suitable against possible malware/virus threats? Or do you recommend another anti-virus product which won't cause conflict with WD?

Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 come with an improved Windows Defender, it offers the same real-time anti-virus/anti-malware protection as Microsoft Security Essentials. Windows Defender also shares the same malware signature definitions as Microsoft Security Essentials, and Forefront Endpoint Protection. Technically, Microsoft Security Essentials has not been renamed Windows Defender, or combined with it in Windows 8, 8.1 and 10, you do not need to use a third party AV.
