Hi my motherboard is ECS H61 Chipset. My pc is working for about half hour and shutting down and the cpu fans are turning on and off with no display. If i turn on the pc after some time it again runs for 30 mins and again crash.

I was checking the motherboard physically, when i saw a resistor near the North bridge has a looser soldering and one side of the resistor is not connected to the board.

I tried to push the resistor but it fallen off and i cannot find that because its very small.


So i think without the resistor the North bridge os overheating and the pc is crashing.

Am i correct? Will the motherboard work if i replace the resistor Or my motherboard is faulty.
 
you'll need to know what colour bands are on the resister so you get the ohms right.
also be careful with soldering as the nearby components may be affected with the heat.
and, if this has happened to one soldered component, is it a tip of the iceberg sort of thing and the motherboard is on a slippery downhill slope?

as to overheating, I'm not sure there is a connection (huh, no pun intended) as resisters throttle voltage, so without the resistor in place, you'll have an open circuit not receiving current.

how confident are you it was a resistor, and not say, a diode or ceramic SMD capacitor?
as they can be very small as well.

here the component in the R246 slot is one i said .

When i saw one side of the smd component was not connected to the motherboard. I tried to push the smd component, but it disappeared as it was very small.

I said it was resistor because it is mentioned R246.

Can this missing resistor cause my pc to crash?. And also the north bridge heat sink is overheating even after replacing the thermal paste.
 
you are correct - definitely a resistor.

as to its function, I have no idea - but it will be important.
they don't just have a component there for fun. :)

if it costs, say, 3 cents for that resistor and they make 1 million boards a year, and that part wasn't really needed, that's a big saving they could easily make by getting rid of it - so yeah, while it's purpose is unknown to me, I can say it would have one!

Can service centre fix this problem because i dont have that resistor
 
sorry, I have no idea.
the few times I have had to return electronic gear while under warranty, all they want to do is either exchange the whole unit or swap out the dead part for a new one.
they have no interest in actually getting down to the electronic level and replacing transistors and doing soldering work.
 
I just gave it to my near by service centre, but they said this cannot be the problem and said the motherboard is faulty. And they returned to me.

Can you confirm that the resistor is the problem. Then ill give to some other highly experienced technician

certainly not down to the individual circuitry level.

all I can say is that missing part would have a purpose but if it's causing the crashes and overheating - I do not know! :unsure:

as said earlier, my other concern would be if one part can 'fall off', that doesn't bode well for the board as a whole - I'd be biting the bullet and get a new mobo.
