Hello !

Since long I have some problems with my gaming computer, it usually crash when I try to play 3d games : ventilator maximal speed, black screen (screen disconnected) but weirdly the computer is 'still running' (meaning I can hear the sound of the game -music AND battle sound of people around me when I play mmo- + Discord isn't disconnected so I can actually explain to my friends that even when they're not kicked out of a game I host, my computer still had crash and I must still reboot it the hard way)

The reason that I found for this is 'LiveKernelEvent 141' that happen right after the crash of Desktop Windows Manager, faulty Kernelbase.dll.

But don't worry, I did my research and actually tried mostly everything I could find. So, let's summarise this a little :

I have this problem since the change of my computer to a little one to be able to move it with me in another country, it was three years ago. I mostly ignored the problem because I didn't had much time (studies) and it was crashing randomly. But this summer, I hardware upgraded my computer (actually a friend of mine did) with higher quality componant, which could maybe solve the issue?....
Spoiler alert : it didn't solve the issue. After the upgrade, friend told me to reinstall windows to help the computer work better, which I didn't do at first bc I was excited... But I did it this 11th of november.
Still the issue.

At some point, I could play again eso without problem (last two days) but today it bugs again idk why....

Hardware :
RAM 32GB Hyper X
Aorus Z5901 ultra
Intel Core i7-11700k
Nvidea Geforce RTX 2060
Watercooling Corsair
Power Supply is 600W semi modular, I don't know which model exactly but could be cooler master bc my friend loves it ----Please wait, I'm gonna look physically when computer is shut down.

Some Software :
CorsairLink
Intel Driver Utility
NVidia Geforce Experiance
---used the app of gigabyte before, but stopped using it

Crashing games :
Elder Scrolls Online (eso)
Kingdom Comes Delivrance

What I did :
Direct X 12 - Ok it is last version
Bios F8a - updated to the last version
----Repair tools used :
cmd :
sfc /scannow

This one I used a few times and somehow, sometimes it repairs again errors when the last time it was ok or repaired? Really weird
I launch it again when it bugs again

Dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth
Dism /online /cleanup-image /ScanHealth
Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

I activated the minidump for my windows but somehow when it crash it doesn't generate a minidump? :c I checked it is indeed choosen in the parameters....

Also check my ram => no problem
and check my SSD => chkdsk also said no problem

Drivers :
All updated using official source here
---For NVidea, I checked on the official site but they showed the same driver as in Geforce Experiance
Windows :
64 bits
Version : 10.0 build 19045.2311 / 22H2
Official? Yes, it is legit windows and activated.
Update : I ask him to check update every day and I immediatly install and restart if necessary.

I saw a few topics here, and it seems you help a lot... I'll use the same software you usually ask :

**** End of log ****

I'm gonna try a reset of windows and install chipset then storage/sata then graphics...
I saw some people had this problem bc of changing motherboard and keeping windows key from the other motherboard, causing Windows to think it is fake... How do I know if it's the case? I am logging to my computer with my Microsoft account. Does it means that the key is saved in it and that if I have the problem I can't solve it? Or if I ave the problem maybe I can just update the key in windows parameters?

Thanks a lot for the help

You might need to get a better psu.. The 141 message notes a hardware failure ... Let's get more help..

@Pyro

Junk PSU, I would throw it out and buy a quality 650W 80+ Gold unit from a quality manufacturer (Corsair, EVGA, Seasonic). Even if that's not your problem, it should be nowhere near a 2060 GPU as it's only meant for low-priority office computers.

Hello !

Thanks for yours replies !

Unfortunatly it's a paid solution, I'm a student and used a lot of money this summer to upgrade my **** computer to a decent one and now struggle to find a job to pay for next studies, so it'll need to wait. But yes I dream of a modular good psu especially since I see all what's inside my computer and I have LED... Beautiful.
(I must also say my ventilators make weird noises, meaning not fan noises but electricity-like noises so maybe yeah psu problem...)
I'll move down in my wishlist the new screen and up the power supply. Thanks for referencies ! Maybe I'll go for Corsair bc I already have the watercooling so it'll be a good match... Erhm studies first.

That aside, I think my problem should be something else, especially bc yesterday it bugged just in the characters selection screen of eso, I did again some fixes then I could play without bug (but I just tried playing 10 min bc it was late). I really think my windows is somehow broken bc game problem comes from DesktopWindowsManager comes from problem with kernelbase.dll , so for me, it should be windows.

What I did, domentation for people with same problem :

  1. Little clean-up
    cmd (admin) :
    sfc /scannow
    Dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth
    Dism /online /cleanup-image /ScanHealth
    Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    Dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
  2. To be sure to not have conflict with windows key and bc I use my microsoft account to connect to windows : I checked on the account, saw that he thought of 2 computers connected (my pc before I reinstall windows+after) so I deleted the before
  3. Saved my files
  4. Prepared an USB with all drivers from official source of my motherboard (several in each category)
  5. Then used my Windows image USB to reinstall Windows while I'm in Windows; software and files not erased. It updated himself before install, then installed and updated (I disconnected the ethernet at this point but computer remembered the Wireless internet so bruh it's useless)
  6. When it's done, I quickly installed all drivers, following the sacred order :
  • chipset
  • storage/sata (had problem to install one bc it was 3 .exe that weren't install so I just launched everything, not sure it did something)
  • graphics (graphic contain Intel + Nvidia driver, Nvidia installed as 'new install' which means the install delete previous drivers and parameters to make a clean install)
Then I lauched the game, and it worked ! Well, again I tried for 10 mins so I'm not sure, but I'm gonna try more in the nexts days to be sure, okay?

Thanks already for your help !
I'll keep you update

Hello,

it just crashed, but another way I think. This time the ventilator didn't seem to go crazy, and the game actually crashed too ! That's a first. I have also the classic LiveKernelEvent 141 and appcrash on dwm.exe with faulty kernelbase.dll.
For the game (Elder scrolls online still) :
appcrash with StackHash_d4a1 at fault.

I check if windows did damage himself again, annnd that's it : Doing the little clean up, sfc /scannow found errors and fixed it.

I didn't get errors again now, but I think Windows is gonna hurt himself again...

If you can get a video of what sound is being made then I can take a listen and tell you if I hear anything unusual.

Ultimately your PSU is the most glaring problem, assuming it didn't cause any damage to other parts of your computer the crashing is probably caused by a lack of good power to everything, particularly your GPU.

We could try to patch it with some basic cleanup, but regardless of if this is the 'the' problem or not, it is a problem.

The struggles of affording new tech is understandable, and you might consider spending a bit more now to not have to upgrade your PSU again down the road, but absolutely do not buy a cheap unit, the money saved is not worth the risk.

Hey !

So yesterday I had another problem, after a crash of ESO the music stopped this time (which wasn't the case before) and when restart I got a repair disk on the boot, before windows. I saw that actually just ESO crashed this time, not dwm.

For the PSU : I asked my friend who built my PC again, he say everything is fine with my PSU model. Could you explain what is wrong with it, so I can discuss better about it? I showed this topic to my friend, he say that he don't understand why you say that. I'm sorry for asking this but it could help me understand computer better, which would actually be good for me !
Anyways, bc I'm desesperate, I will wait for Christmas when I can ask someone with a gamer computer to maybe try his PSU (I suppose he has a very good one, that's why) to see if it helps before putting money in it (and maybe until then I can find a job so I can get the money?)

Can we try your basic cleanup to patch it? Most of the jobs I found are starting in January (if they accept me), so I'll be surely with time until I get me one anyways...

I'm gonna look to record the sound but I already tried and usually the recorder thinks it's parasit noise and cancel it so it's very hard to record it.

Thank you

The 20 series cards are very power intensive, with all of the new technologies they had and the jump in processing power they need more physical power.

Here is a link telling you what PSU you need for you GPU, it says for your uses, a Gold Efficiency (or higher) 650W PSU from a reputable seller (Corsair, EVGA, Seasonic).

Now that we've established what a good PSU is for you, let's talk about what you have in the system currently.

If you look at this PSU comparison sheet, yours is marked as inadequate for even iGPU systems (think low intensity office computers). PSUs are often forgotten about, but it's one of the places that you "technically" can't go too expensive on as long as you keep upgrading your computer as the time comes. Low power can cause all sorts of issues, in my experience it typically starts with the GPU not being able to keep up with the current program (crashing).

If you have someone you know with a quality PSU you could borrow in the meantime, that would be all the better to ensure we are attacking the right angle of this. However, even if this is not your exact problem- which I have good reason to believe it is, it is definitely something that should be replaced for the well-being of the system (Bad PSUs can burn other things up).

Your friend is right to be skeptical of advice on the internet, but I can personally assure you that none of the advisors, staff, or moderators here on PCHF will push you to spend money on things we don't have reason to believe you'd need. We're not paid to push anything, that's why this site is free to access and post on. :)

This is my laundry list, it's a good starting point for troubleshooting:

1. Try running the following programs, also try to keep at least 20-25% of your disks as free space.

Run Disk Cleanup (check all the boxes) this will delete things such as your recycling bin, so make sure you don't have any files you want to keep.

Run Defragment and Optimize Drives, run this on your drives.

2. Disable any overclocking or changes to power/performance settings

Turn off XMP/any overclocking you may have done (if any)

Settings > System > Power and sleep > Additional power settings
Make sure your power plan is set to balanced, anything else could tamper with the wrong settings and cause issues.

3. Check for Operating System Corruption

Right click on the Windows logo in the bottom left and select Windows Powershell (Admin)
Run these three commands separately:

sfc /scannow

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

These will take a while to run, do not close out of Powershell while they are running, if one fails then move onto the next and then loop back around.

Note: It doesn't hurt to make a system backup before you make all these changes, save any important files of folders. While these changes shouldn't cause any issues, better to be safe than sorry.

4. Unplug unnecessary devices.

If you have a gamepad, extra monitor(s), external hard drive/flash drive, or anything that is not essential to using the computer plugged in, unplug it.

Once you have completed all of these tasks, restart it (using the restart option in the power menu) and re-test.

Hello !

Thank you for not giving up on me ! ><

For the PSU : I've send screenshot to my friend, I wait for an answer ! For myself, I've looked a little bit in it, and I'm very happy for that because I'm sure I'm gonna learn a lot reading this ^^

So actually, most of the things on your laundry list has already been done ! I've just done extra the disk cleanup (saw it deleted the journal of windows errors so read it before it was erased) Btw, I saw that at some point, my error journal of windows deleted himself (reset himself?) for apparently no reason?... Or maybe it was the repair of C:/ that happened at some point after reboot that did it.

For the defragment, I would avoid bc I have an SSD, not HDD, and I've read it should be avoided for SSD.

For overclocking, I'm pretty sure we didn't do any, bc my PC is already powerful enough as it is. I don't know how to check so I still asked my friend, just to be sure. Waiting for his answer.

The power setting were already to normal.

The code you're asking me to run then is my little cleanup shorted ! :3 Bc of the bugs to start I had today I'm indeed doing it again! But with the 5 lines of code, I suppose it's even better. But ! I would like to add that I did it a lot those days and somehow Windows seems to be hurting himself bc it still find things to repair, from time to time...

For the devices, I never use unnecessary devices, so, it's surely not at fault ! ^^

Anyways, I had a lots of problems running my PC today. Started with loud weird noises from the fans, I wanted to restart, but was windows was weird : Task bar showing to the right just windows menu icon, no shortcut that usual also appears on the bar.... I think I also had some weird white rectangle up right. I freaked out and just shut down the power. (sorry computer, it was harsh...) About the fan's noises problem : it happend not much that those loud weird noises happend, usually it's little weird noises (that I suppose being electricity). The solution is usually to slow down the speed and put it back to the same speed as before using the remote, but this time the remote didn't want to work... Btw those noises are so loud that yeah, I can get you the sound !

Next start : The image is displayed one centimeter approxiatly to the right, which result on a black vertical band to the left of the screen. Also, the display is weird, meaning with like a lots of horizontal lines, color approching to magenta. When a fenster is open and moved, the lines have a reaction and somehow moves with it. I asked Windows to restart, and, here I go, functioning computer ! :D (Well not exactly but gotta keep positiv)

Do you, by any chance, either know a problem that could expressly say that the PSU is at fault, or maybe a program that record the performance of the PSU? (like to record if we see that the PSU gives not enough Watt, but precisely how much it gives?)

Thanks in advance ! ^^
I'm gonna prepare a .mp3 from the loud unusual fan noises.

Dear Pyro Advisor,

I feel not so much confortable to drop things in the public thread so just for the files I'm gonna send you privatly.
By files, I mean :
- a Video for the fan loud noise problem
- a Video for the display problem
By .zip it it should be possible to send, I suppose.

Yeah, both of the problems got solved by some restarts, but I think it's a good clue of what happend to my computer, especially bc it's both problem that happened before.

Thanks again ! :D

For the defragment, I would avoid bc I have an SSD, not HDD, and I've read it should be avoided for SSD.
Windows trims SSDs instead of defragmenting them, it's okay to do. :)

Do you, by any chance, either know a problem that could expressly say that the PSU is at fault, or maybe a program that record the performance of the PSU?
Having graphical issues is normal if your GPU is not receiving enough power as far as I am concerned, let's just hope there's no permanent damage done by the bad PSU.

I'll take a look at those videos when I get a chance.

Regarding your videos (which are safe to post here if you wish to do so),

The display bug appears to be regarding the GPU.

You can remove the GPU from the system and plug into the motherboard, try this and see if it helps, removing that load should help alleviate the problems to some degree (the PSU could still cause issues).

If it were by some miracle not the GPU (lack of power), we could start attacking the monitor, but based on the info we have now I have good reason to believe it's still the PSU.

I hear coil whine from the GPU (normal under load for most cards), and the fans are ramping up a bit, do you fan connectors have 3 holes or 4?

For reference:
1669494160328.png

Ignoring most of the text, do your fan cable-ends (the ones on the left) have the 4th (blue) PWM part?

Hello !

For Trimm :
I looked one the internet bc I wasn't sure if you meant that I should trimm with Windows defrag or with something else. Looking on this reference I used code in cmd to know if it was activated : fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify
It should have returned a line with 0 to say it was activated or 1 desactivated.
It returned TWO lines finishing with 0 (desactivated). I only have one disk and I'm very confused... Does that mean it's activated or not?? xDDD

(EDIT : Wait what? I did it again to show a friend and now I have just one line??? What happend...)

For GPU :
I didn't understand at all what to do, I'm sorry. For me the system is the whole computer and I thought my GPU was already plug into motherboard...

Display bugs :
Actually, bc my friend at some point talk about monitor I tried to switch to another at some point, and never had this display problem with it, but used my old monitor again bc the graphics quality are better, so I'll keep in mind monitor.

Fans:
It seems I have 3 connectors if I understood well.

Some more infos : The white fans you saw, with the leds are all connected to a little box and can be remotely controlled (color of led, speed of the fans, ...). It seems important to tell, bc as I told you, when they go berserk often I just need to downspeed once and upspeed once. Meaning it seems to be more those fans that fans inside the GPU. Don't know if it helps.

At some point my friend told me it could be Intel Graphics and Nvidia that bother each and that it could be helped by modifying some parameters... What do you think ?

(btw my friend didn't answer about PSU ... :') )

Thank youu ! ^^

Display Problem (NEWS):
So you know the display problem I showed you? well I got a crash and display problem next reboot. For screen I use my LG but I also have a TV.
So while I had this display problem, I switch of screen to the TV, no problem anymore, then switch again to LG no problem anymore.
So weird.
I must say I have an old screen with the blue plug, but I use an adaptater that convert to HDMI. On both of the screen bc TV has HDMI possibility but I don't have an HDMI cabel from now.

Btw when eso crash the error is StackHash_d4a1.

Could you upload your dump files? I am curious as what they point to. I am not a hardware person, I was just going to check the dump files. You are in good hands with PYRO. I have no other input on this thread, just to check the dumps. :)

This link explains how to grab your minidump files.

Last edited:
OH my *** it did it !

I was gonna tell you that even if minidump is activated, windows never does it on crash but checked just to be sure and I have now ONEE mini dump ! (so many crash but just one minidump :'c)

Then I'm gonna show it to you and also look if I can find some google-able errors in it.

So today I tried something new again, could be the reason it dumped for once.
Got the usual error :
  • while gaming (elder scrolls online)
  • black screen (it seems it is 'no signal')
  • still music
  • fans goes berserk - speed is superior to what I can get when I put maximum with my remote - (not the fans of GPU or any componant, the fans just for the air flows inside of PC)
  • (sometimes it does the sound of windows unplug external device, I suspect it could be the screen)
Bc of this :

I thought, well the game is still running, let's change the screen while crashing, maybe it will work.

LG -> TV (both VGA with adaptater)

The music stopped to a weird constant sound. I shutted down computer afterwards.

To Pyro about the Trimm : I read again your post and you actually said explicitly windows does it. I'm stupid, sorry :X3:

Thanks !

I already did it once before and twice after reinstall of windows. But I'll try again, maybe the clean install of nvidea is not so good as DDU, I trust you anyways, maybe bc I'm so desesperate.

Just before I was searching to check the health of my GPU. So I know I have a Geforce RTX 2060 (asked dxdiag again). I use Geforce Experience, but some times I tried directly on the site and it didn't help.

Nvidea site : oh yes, you're here for the driver of the RTX 4060. Bruh. Guess it is nice to check if Nvidia auto-detection works or not.

How do I check if the intel detection make sense? Maybe I look what my processor contain for an Intel Graphics...

Okay so download time is like 2hours so I'll post this now and keep you updated.
