Ok so Im getting a new laptop soon as my current one is kinda "old" Now I believe something is wrong with my current laptop OS a when I try to copy or paste files from one place to another (to or from external drives r download from the internet) I get messages saying I dont have access or must be administrator even though I already am, and none of the troubleshooting in the past we've done that issue worked. Only thing we didnt try was to restore OS... which theres a way to do it without losing your files however it says just to be safe make sure you have a backup (which I dont) and the right recovery CD... however my pc was originally windows 8.. I got the free upgrade to WIn 10 thus I dont have a recovery CD and was afraid my Win 8 recovery wouldnt work so I didnt wanna test it and risk losing my stuff.


So my question is this. If I get a new laptop with a new fresh OS on it. is there a way to ransfer ALL the files from my old laptop to the new one withouttransfering any of the old laptops OS information or settings? basically i wanna transfer everything from my old laptop except the OS so I dont end up giving my new laptop OS whatever my old ones got (no theres no malware)
 
personally, I would remove the old laptops hard drive, put it into an external enclosure, plug that enclosure into the new drive and copy and paste to your hearts content.

of course, the 2 hurdles there are; you know how to remove the drive and install it into the enclosure, and that you have an enclosure. :)

You cannot transfer programmes/games, anything that has exe files must be clean installed on the new computer.

You mention malware, not sure why but if you have any reason to believe that the present computer is infected you would be wise to ask the security staff to check it out for you.

the first 3-4 lines of my post show why i mentioned malware, and the security staff has already checke it out which is how I know its clean, thus my problem isnt a malware one
 
Sorry if I am missing something but I don`t see anything in your OP to suggest that the computer has been checked for and given the all clear of malware by the security staff only "basically i wanna transfer everything from my old laptop except the OS so I dont end up giving my new laptop OS whatever my old ones got"

Malware can affect anything but personal data is the most likely to be infected, Windows is more secure as you cannot download content to and from Windows whereas using someone else`s USB thumbdrive or opening a suspect email can infect your computer.

For Windows 10 media, you upgraded to 10 from 8/8.1 so can download Windows 10 for free from here

I dont wanna copy my current laptops OS over to my new laptop in fear that the issue described above may come with it. Thus my new lapto pwill already have windows 10 clean pre installed on it so I just wnakowif copying from old laptop to new laptop will copy/overwrite anything OS wise
 
Fully understand what you are saying and that is why I advised that you cannot transfer anything that contains exe files, documents, music, pictures and videos are fine.

What I do with new HDDs (unless asked not to) is partition them before first use, this keeps Windows separate from your personal data which makes backing up easier + helps to protect Windows from becoming corrupted, some info for you on this here
 
heres one question... Itll have two 2TB HDDs in it... since I plan to use both for storage and not for back up or anything like that (aside fro the small partition most PCs come with) Is there any reason NOT to use RAID to combine the two har drives into one big 4th drive as opopsed to having 2 different 2TB hard drives and 2 different partitions?
 
what you are describing sounds like RAID0 and is fine if you do not case about redundancy (or fault tolerance).
lose one drive - lose all your data.

but as you state, you don't care about backups so, sure, you could setup the RAID Controller for that configuration.
you'll just have to get the new laptop's BIOS that will handle that for you

This is fairly common issue that may be solved by adding "Take Ownership" to your files/folders you can't move.

Read this and there is a download at the bottom of the blog to add Take Ownership to your context menu.

Yeah teh whole take ownership thing has been tried before as well. still didnt work as the things you wer esupposed to see when doing that either werent there or were greyed out
 
So one other thing. Im gonna post some specs... one is for laptop the other is for PC. and I wanan know which of the two is better (most liely gonna be PC), how MUCH better it is than the other, and is the gap in performance (i,e being better) high enough to warrant paying an additional $800 (it would be $600 but the shipping is nearly 200 on the desktop whereas laptop sjhiping is free( for. (i.e "The PC is better but that "better" is only godo enough for a $200 extra inventment its not good enough to justify spending an additional $800" is the kinda answer Im looking for in that third part):

So basically performance/speed/gaming wise which is better, how MUCH better is it than the other (20%, 30% etc etc), and is that extra performance from the bette one high/good enough to justify an extra $800 (if not how much extra SHOULD it cost) or is the difference so incremental that the laptop would be a better choice because the difference is so small that the lower priced item would be the better bet?
