I have recently purchased a new Computer, Windows 10 with pre-installed MS Office 2016. My computer was working fine from last 1 months. But yesterday my Outlook stopped working and reported the error:

“Cannot start MS Office. Cannot open the Outlook Windows. The set of a folder cannot be opened. Errors have been detected in the file: C;\users\username\local\microsoft\outlook\outlook.pst. “

Hi JerryFrey and welcome to PCHF :)

Let's get some info about your machine :)

Please download MiniToolBox and save it to your desktop. Run the program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as administrator. When the program opens select the following boxes:

List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
List Installed Programs
List Devices (Only Problems)
List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Please post the log in your next reply :)

Hi
sounds like pst file is corrupt try repair it (y)

Repair a .pst file
  1. Exit Outlook and do one of the following:
    • Browse to C:\Program Files.

      or

    • Browse to C:\Program Files (x86).
  2. In the Search box, type SCANPST.EXE.

Notes: If the search doesn't find SCANPST.EXE in one folder, try searching in the other folder mentioned in step 1. Navigate to the folder location based on your version of Outlook.
    • Outlook 2016: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16

    • Outlook 2013: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15

    • Outlook 2010: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14

    • Outlook 2007: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12
  3. Open SCANPST.EXE.

  4. In the Enter the name of the file you want to scan box, enter the name of the .pst file you want the tool to check, or choose Browse to select the file.

Note: By default, a new log file is created during the scan. You can choose Options and opt not to have a log created, or you can have the results appended to an existing log file.

  5. Choose Start to begin the scan.

  6. If the scan finds errors, choose Repair to start the process to fix them.

Note: The scan creates a backup file during the repair process. To change the default name or location of this backup file, in the Enter name of backup file box, enter a new name, or choose Browse to select the file you want to use.

Here are some methods to fix this one error:

Method 1: Repair corrupt System Files

Method 2: Start Outlook in safe mode

Method 3: Repair Outlook Data file

This error generally appears when you encounter error or damage in Outlook PST file. Therefore, I suggest you to use ScanPST.exe i.e. completely free utility.
In case, The ScanPST.exe method fails to fix error in Outlook PST file, then you can give a try to third party tool like Stellar Phoenix Outlook PST Repair.

Note: Users should try its free demo version for 100% assurance
