(Continued from previous because can't edit.) My flash drive is not listed in boot options. USB controller does not exist.

yes, i see, all i did was copy. you've been very generous with your time. so i installed rufus and burned, not copy, the iso to the flash. F10, selected my flash drive. Booted into the window you showed earlier (install now / repair). chose repair. system restore. "You must always restore the drive that contains windows" and "you must enable system protection of this drive." so i tried to install protection via command prompt: "this app can't run on this pc."

i fear the mother board or hard drive are damaged or corrupted. thank you for your time. by the way, i have a new pc coming Saturday. even if we were to repair my windows 10 pc, it never ran reliably.

No, I rescued them all by entering notepad from command prompt, then selecting folders and file one by one, and I forgot the the rest of the procedure, but I have every folder and file on an SSD. I guess you're telling me I need to clean install?

Thank you again.

A clean install would be best.
Have you checked the folders to see if you can read the data you took off?
You should try the Startup repair option after booting from the USB.
It might work as it should be trying to repair from the usb. Worth a try.
The other option is to do an install - not clean and it should put all you data into a separate folder.

If you do a clean install we would need to make sure we can get the drivers first.
What is the make, Model and serial number of the computer.

well, i played a few audio files. however, i have many Finale v27 music notation files but Finale v27 doesn't support Windows 8.

tried startup repair several times; says can not run.

i like the idea of install as opposed to clean.

Aspire TC-780-AMZKi5 / S/N: DTB89AA008710027963000

thank you.

P.S.: Install (and keep files...) tells me "This option is only available when a supported version of Windows is already running of this computer." Not one single repair function has run. Thinking something is just plain broken. Like I said, CHKDSK ran fine but scannow would not run.

This option is only available when a supported version of Windows is already running of this computer
Not sounding good.
Can you take a pic and attach?.
If yes
Run the usb again and go to command prompt under the repair option screen
At cmd
Type Diskpart and press enter
When dispart loads
Type List Vol press enter
Either take a pic and attach
OR
Write down what shows up
To exit diskpart
Type exit press enter

just tried install now. hangs at getting ready, 20 mites. thanks, goodbye. i'll just set up my new pc and smash the living **** out of this 10 lemon piece of ****. thank you for all your help, your time.

Strange, It should only be like this.

Sorry I could not get you going.
If you wish to try latter let us know.

Somehow, the clean install of Windows 10 completed just fine. Thank for all your time in guiding me to this point. And thanks for keeping open this help connection,

Am installing Finalev27. We'll see if it works normally now.

Oh, a question. I unpacked and set up this ACER over a year after it arrived. I wanted to use it only for work programs to stay offline. But Windows updates were installed. But I would uninstall the ones that could be uninstalled. Could this have affected the PC performance?

Also, any suggestions on how to use a PC strictly offline. I guess I still have to accept updates?

Thanks again.

I guess I still have to accept updates?
Not if it is offline
All we need to do is check the device manager for any missing drivers.
Then just turn wi fi off and do not plug in a network cable.
It does not need to be updated once all drivers are installed.

Click on search and type in Device manager.
Open device manager
Do you see any Yello exclamation marks or red crosses.

No yellow exclamation marks or red crosses. And I expanded everything there.

In the beginning when I started using this PC, I could not figure out a way to block windows updates and just use the PC online. When I went to shutdown, there were little flags attached to "shutdown" and when I shut down, the updates would install before the PC shut down. I was not online! How do the bastards sneak in their updates?

I'd like to use my new PC (still boxed till I get this one going) strictly offline for music work.

Thanks again.

Wait, wait, wait! I checked again. "Other Devices"--yes, every item in there has the exclamation and says drivers are not installed.

Continued... Under Other Devices, the following had exclamation points: Base System Device, PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processor Controller, PCI Memory Controller, PCI Simple Communications Controller, PCI SM Bus Controller.
