Hi All, at this present time I am on my sister in laws pc, at home.
I am having issues with a windows update problem, that needs your help.
when trying to update, I keep getting an error message, cannot not update etc etc,
error messages include, kb947821 and 80070490 and 80244019, tried certain fix its via windows tools, but alas no good.
read a little via web, but still unsure of issue, thanks in advance, stupo

Hi stupo. What happens when you try installing those updates manually from the Microsoft website? Do the updates still fail to install? If so what is the error code that you get?

I would first try Resetting Windows Update components and see if that solves the problem.

If that doesn't work then try Performing a clean boot in Windows and see if that helps.

Hi Evan, thanks for your support.
Tried loads of stuff, fix it tool, etc etc,
tried start up repair, it done something then just kept restarting over and over again,
when it did eventually start there were 2 options each time, start up repair and start normally.
After trying each option twice, on the final attempt, it said windows cannot fix this computer
automatically, so had no option but to shut down.
So now it wont even boot to windows,
i realise i can do a clean install, but do not want to lose all her data,
if i have a copy of windows iso on usb, would booting pc from that repair windows without erasing
all her personal files ???
I suppose my other option is to remove hdd, put in my docking station, copy everything, format hdd
then return and load all her files back, hope this sounds right, i am sure you will put me right(y)

Yes that's what I would do in this situation. Go ahead and take out the hard drive, copy everything over to an external hard drive, put the hard drive back in the computer then reinstall Windows and copy everything from the external hard drive back over to the computer.

Then make sure to install the latest drivers for the hardware devices and install all of the Windows Updates as well. If you need any other assistance then feel free to let us know. (y)

Hi Evan, thanks for the reply, yes i will probably need some further help, so please keep this thread open, a little while longer
cheers stupo

Me again, taken out the hdd, plugged into docking station, connected to my pc.
can i copy the files to my pc ?? the drive has been partitioned in to recovery so as well as (c) there is G and F shall we say
so would i be able to copy to my lets say documents on my pc, then recover later
then do i have to format the drive before replacing ? and loading windows ?
Have not got, installation or recovery disks, but have a downloaded version of 7 home premium on usb.
this pc was bought with pre-installed windows, has product key sticker on rear, will this be used to validate windows again
or will something else need to be purchased, hope all this makes sense:whistle:

You are describing a PC that should have the ability to recover your existing install (drives "G and F" may indicate the presence of a manufacturer provided recovery partition in addition to the Windows 7 recovery environment).

Yes - copy the existing data for later recovery (a fail safe measure) by any means you see fit to employ.

Power off the PC.
Power on.
For few seconds, you have the ability to select the boot device. Typically, pressing one of these keys will enter Boot Device screen - F8, F9, F10 or F12, sometimes ESC.
ID the make and model and I can likely tell you which key.

You might see "Factory Restore" or equivalent. This will completely re-write your existing installation and delete every personal file and every user installed program.

BUT
That Win7 USB device offers another option - assuming the PC's installed Windows version is the same as is on the USB device.
If it matches, boot from the USB and select REPAIR My Computer

Hi Antman, thanks for your support.
Her pc is a medion, only model number i can find is PC MT 14
says type as MED MT 642 G does this help ??
Also the usb stick i have, is a downloaded version from digital related .com
says its the full version of home premium windows 7 32 bit.
I could not download from microsoft because when i put the product key in
they said i would need to contact the system builder ??
Going back to my downloaded version, am i breaking any rules ?
afterall the product key that is on the machine is genuine
is all so confusing to me,
i have tried the bios boot menu only things there are the usb bla bla
hdd sata, and dvd drive, tried the system recovery option
only 2 listed, start up repair or start normally, wont do anything
just says windows cant repair, so i have to shut down

While you have the disk attached to another PC for file recovery, run a SMART test on the drive and a chkdsk. It is possible, if unlikely, that a disk or file system failure is at play.
got the drive hooked up to my pc, running error checking as we speak, taking its time, been running for ages

medion model PC MT 14 / MED MT 642 G
...am i breaking any rules ?

tried the system recovery option
You are not breaking any rules. That sticker code is for that PC.
I assume "bla bla" does not include any terms similar to 'factory restore'
"tried the system recovery option" is ambiguous. Did you encounter that option AFTER booting from USB stick and selecting 'Repair my computer"?

Did you run SMART test before running chkdsk?

Hi Antman, many thanks again for your help.
the number you require is,,,10013933,
as for the above, i have not tried the usb windows iso file yet as i think i have made a mistake when downloading to my usb stick.
when i formatted the stick, it said fat32 file system, i do believe that it needs formatting to ntfs or something like that ??
i really am a doughnut with all this stuff, go around the houses and *** knows how many roundabouts:whistle::confused:, but most of the time get there in the end.
as for my stick iso file, i downloaded from digitalrelated.com, would you think this is safe ??
I will not do anymore, i have her hdd safe, with all files still readable, and a back up on my pc of all her music pics etc etc,
she has a laptop to use in the meantime, so no rush req, i want to get this right, and it helps me learn more, LOL
Thanks again for your time(y), I will get back to you with any later developments.
some info on weather the iso file download will be safe, and do i need to change the format on my stick, ??? would be nice
hope it all makes sense:confused:, cheers stupo (paul)

The FAT32 format is fine. I rarely use NTFS on flash memory (USB sticks or memory cards). NTFS involves 'unnecessary' disk writes and shortens the life span of the device compared to FAT32.

I cannot attest to the sanctity of your ISO file, but I do not fear it. Hopefully, you actually created a bootable USB drive and then extracted the ISO file to the drive. You cannot 'just copy the ISO to the thumb drive'.

Based on the MSN number, you have a Medion Akoya P7360 D PC MD 8345.

In my opinion, running the SMART test is your priority. It is virtually instantaneous. If you get a fail on any aspect of that test, it may explain everything else. One of your error codes (80070490) indicates a file corruption that, in a remote support condition, requires a full re-install of Windows. It is possible that chkdsk /r could correct this condition - but it is not likely, especially if SMART reports any failure or warning. Lastly, running a command line from the USB device may find some reward in the command sfc /scannow, but again, it is not likely.

Based solely on the age of the computer, read here - the age of the hard drive and the likely low quality drive in place, I suspect hard drive failure. I could be wrong. Even if I am wrong, I could not recommend a re-install of Windows on a hard drive of that vintage.

whoops, see what you mean, just downloaded the file from where i said ,and downloaded to my stick drive, probably no good anyway ??
such a muppet i am.
The pc in question was bought from a now well known retailer on the high st, and came with no recovery disks etc.
so are you telling me that a copy is no good, unless i have software to open it ?

Hi all, quick update,
Been reading loads of stuff, checked out all the links antman has sent, and now "Brain" Has "Crashed" lolo_O
I have so far been able to access the system recovery tools, start up repair etc etc
When start up repair scans and ends, text says windows can not fix this computer automatically
I am given the opportunity to enter cmd prompt window, so is there a way i can fix the corrupted registry
file via this route ?? and what steps, (please remember my time zone is "Pensioner Mode) so the instructions
would need to be literally one by one:unsure:.
Hope the above makes sense, I do realise if this is a no go, i will have to re-install windows,
I have saved all her data, and should be able to put it all back, i will be asking for help there too.
Thanks for help, stupo
