Hi Antman, sorry for the delay, but the most inconvenient task known as work gets in the way from time to time:rolleyes:
I ran a check on the drive with the link you provided (passmark) , and i have the results in front of me, status listed as ok no faults.
done the disk self test (5 minute job) and says no faults, so drive ok ??? or any other checks that need doing ??.
i have read about a reinstall, and what i should back up, i have literally, backed up everything on the drive, and the recovery partition,
which has 10 gig free of 19, there is also another partition, that says there is nothing there, but 70 mb available of 99.9mb ?
whats that please ?
I will need some help on restoring files to the new install, where to put what, and when, what order etc,
I have a windows install usb flash drive, with the same operating system version, and the product key off the pc itself
to activate windows again.
so, i suppose its time to take the plunge:eek: Unless, anything else i need to know, or do, or tryo_O

You know your getting there, when, the "saga over 50 adverts" are being dropped through the door on a "Daily Basis"

Me again, still pondering this re instal, Have backed up all the data, but worried about how i put it all back
Dont want to mess it up, sister in law wont be happy if i do:eek:l

What ever back up software you have used you will use to restore.

You should be able to tell it to restore to original directories or select witch one. Most back up software allows this to be done.

If you dragged and dropped the files or copy and pasted them to the external storage device.

As a precaution I will also suggest that you have more than one copy. Backups can fail and NOT on the same drive if that drive fails...

Hi Rustys, thanks for taking time to look,
I just highlighted all the data on the drive and sent to my documents, then copied to another drive, via my docking station.
so when i install windows again, i just plug in my drive and copy the stuff i need, is this right ??
Will it be that easy ?? how will i know what goes where, forgive my ignorance, but never done this before:notworthy:

Hi All, just a quick update
I have done a re install via the recovery program, all so far seems to have gone ok
Updates (not many) have installed, including sp1, there are probably alot more to install, but brain dead at this time, so a good slurp req:rolleyes:
updated antivirus, transferred some of her files back, music pics etc etc
I would request that the thread stay open, for a few more days, until she visits on friday, so i can check with her that all is done to her satisfaction
Thanks to you all, could not and would not have done it without your expertise(y)

Me again, Everything seems ok with reinstall, some updates including sp1 downloaded and installed, however, whilst trying to check for further updates,
it will not pass the screen that says checking for them, been stuck for hours like this, is there something i am missing:confused:
even the windows update agent tool has been installed, so i am baffled.
As of now, i feel deflated, success, now failure again, i think i will need more than 1 slurp after work tonight, why are computers so much hastle:mad:

Hi ALL, Thanks to your dedication, in helping others, i can finally say i have achieved, my objective.(y)
All updates have finally installed, all the files she required are back, and this little machine is flying again.
