Monitor turn on/off my laptop!

Hello! I've tried to find an answer to my problem online but I'm not getting anywhere.

I received a Dell laptop and a monitor from my work but I'm having a strange issue. Whenever I have the monitor plugged into the laptop (using a USB-C cable), pressing the power button on the monitor causes the laptop to turn on and off. On a side note, when I have the monitor plugged in, it won't display anything.

Besides the obvious power cord, the only other cord that the monitor came with was a DP cable. Unfortunately, the laptop does not have a DP port. Any thoughts on would be going on? Thanks!

g'day jebster and welcome tot he forums. :)

just to be clear, without the external monitor connected, the laptop works fine.
what is make/model of the Dell laptop, or better still, find the Service Tag sticker and give us that number.
