I'm having an issue where my approximately 8 years old Acer Spin3 laptop keeps disconnecting from the internet. It seems to happen more often if I'm doing multiple things on my laptop, but it will disconnect even when I'm simply looking at email or something too. It goes from the 🛜 to 🌐 symbol and I have to restart my laptop to get back online. Sometimes the 🛜 symbol comes back, but I can't connect to the internet until I restart my laptop. I have a few games that I play that were on my Startup that I took off of that, but that didn't help.

1) Let’s show the complete PC specs using Speccy by Piriform - Get Speccy - Is Speccy safe?

In Speccy, click File > Publish Snapshot (hit Yes if prompted) > Copy to Clipboard > Close.
Paste that link into your post.

2) Speccy doesn’t show the Power Supply Unit so list the make/model of the PSU.

3) Let’s also show installed programs using MiniToolBox by FarBar - Get MTB
In MTB, tick List Installed Programs, click Go then close the program.
A file MTB.txt is created in the same folder, attach that in a post.

Set a static ip.

Remove all security programs except windows defender then reboot.

I don't understand this.

Hmm, I don't really understand this. What is a static ip? Internet provider? How do I even know what security programs I have? I have Norton, but I don't want to remove it.

I see this report of my errors that I think are causing my problems.

In my post, click the link to download Speccy.
In the download folder it was saved to, double click the speccy executable file to install it.
Once installed, click on Start and find the program in the list and click it to run it.
Then, in the program, click File, then Publish Snapshot, then Copy to Clipboard, then Close.
You now have the link we are chasing copied, paste that link into your next post.

Hi, a bit nervous about publishing things online, but here goes.

I'll go through the Speccy report - but rest assured - there is nothing in it that can be used against you.
It contains nothing that isn't publicly available already, and in no way offers us, or anyone reading the report, any access to your PC or data.

With the MTB file, again it contains Application Errors, System Errors, and CodeIntegrity Errors, but not Installed Programs.
Can you double check, when you run it, that NO boxes are ticked EXCEPT for the 10th one down the list labelled - List Installed Programs. (y)

Remove Nortons using their supplied removal tool from their website. If it turns out not to affects things, it can be reinstalled later.

Go to Control Panel, Device Manager, expand Network Adapters, double click your wireless adapter.
Look for anything power related.
Anything that mentions Wake On - set to on/enable, anything that says Sleep on - set to off/disable.
Also look for any category that mentions Power Save Mode.
See if anything helps after tweaking those settings.

If not, while still in Device Manager, right click the wireless adapter, and choose Uninstall.
Reboot the laptop and Windows will discover new hardware and reinstall it.
See if that helps.

If not, I'd be visiting the Intel website and looking for an updated wireless driver.
Other options are a repair install of Windows, or even bypassing the issue altogether and getting a USB wireless dongle for about $30.

Also, have you tried rebooting the modem?

Hi, sorry for making you work so hard! I'm not stupid, but at 58 I have trouble integrating all this new computer stuff! Here is the MTB file. I keep having an issue where the notepad document that it generates has multiple tabs, some with different infomation.

It's all good Chris, we've all been there at some stage.
And good news, this MTB report was spot on. :)

It shows a few things to remove;
  • Norton's (as already mentioned)
  • Acer Jumpstart
  • Acer Config manager
  • Driver setup utility
After uninstalling those, do the other things mentioned in post #13 and let us know how you get on.

Hi, sorry to keep you busy, but it's hard for me to do it all at once. So I found the Network Adaptor. This is what I see. I am scared to unistall my wireless adaptor, can I really get it back? How can I download something when I won't have internet access? I have no issues on any other devices in my house, just this laptop. I got rid of a game I downloaded, Plarium Play/Raid:Shadow Legends, and that seems to have helped a bit, but not fixed it completely. But I'm also scared to get rid of my Norton Antivirus. Can I just get it back?

I’m only sporadically able to get online with my laptop. I just made this Google account on my iphone. Really sorry

Would there be any way to have set up some sort of live chat if you have time?

Let's address your concerns. :)

We don't do live chats, or one on one help, we keep it public in the open forum so others can chime in with assistance.
This way, anything mentioned that helps can be searched for, and accessed by others, later down the track.

As to Norton's, yes it can always be reinstalled.
Best way is to go to their website and download your product from them.
You would have needed an installation key to install it initially, so you either use the same key, or login with your Norton's Account, where they already have your subscription details.
But really, the inbuilt Windows Security Centre, running Defender, is all you need these days, been that way for maybe 8-10 years I reckon.
Defender ranks as good, or better, than the paid-for products in any independent test I have seen.

Also yes for the wireless adapter.
Uninstall it and have Windows automatically reinstall it has it discovers 'new' hardware when you reboot the PC.
But as a precautionary measure, you can always pre-download the wireless adapter driver from here; https://www.acer.com/au-en/support/drivers-and-manuals
Enter your serial number, or product number, to see the list of drivers for your laptop.
You should do this anyway, because if the uninstall/auto-reinstall doesn't work, this will be the next straw we clutch - installing the latest driver.

Hi, OK, I've done most of it.

• Norton's (as already mentioned)

• Acer Jumpstart - DONE

• Acer Config manager - DONE

• Driver setup utility - DONE

So I'll go ahead and try to remove the Norton's. So, would you recommend my not bothering to renew my subscription to it next year?

The only other thing is the wireless adaptor, so I'll do those two things now. Thanks. Updates to follow. It seems like it's running a bit better, but still kicking me off and then not having any access points for the internet.
