Solved 6800 XT Keeps Crashing (Black Screen) While Gaming

Hello,

My pc keeps on crashing whenever I am playing games like overwatch, total war warhammer 3, etc.

This has been going on for quite a while now, I believe since September 2023 and I have not found a fix till this day. I have tried many different versions of AMD adrenalin to no avail, the most recent stable one was the November 2023 version and January 2023 version, my pc still crashes but not as frequent as it is now. Currently i am using the November 2023 version but it is crashing a lot and will be moving to January 2023 version (I'll ddu the old one)

I have read this thread: https://pchelpforum.net/t/6800-xt-keep-crashing-black-screen-while-gaming-and-stress-test.88088/ , but I have decided to just create a new post since I may have different issues mentioned in the thread.

Welcome to PCHF gman927,

While we look at Speccy can you post the brand and model name or number details for the most important component in a computer, the PSU.

Good quality and spec PSU so would only suggest that you make sure that all modular cables are securely connected at both ends, be careful to not exert too much pressure on the MB connectors.

Couple of things of note in Speccy, as they are list and each equally as important;

Ryzen CPUs are notorious for not liking slow RAM so you need to enable XMP so as to get rid of that bottleneck.

The recent clean Windows install was not done correctly, see my canned info below;

Once Windows has been clean installed you must then install first the MBs chipset drivers then the storage/SATA drivers and third the graphics drivers, the drivers can either come from a disk provided by the motherboard manufacturer or downloaded from their site and saved to a flash drive etc, this is a must and Windows should not be allowed to check for updates before it has been done as more often than not Windows installs the wrong drivers or in the incorrect order and this can cause all sorts of problems.

The reason why this procedure is so important, the chipset is what enables the MB to be able to communicate with all the hardware + are the first drivers that Windows looks for on boot.

Couple of questions for you;

Did you have anything else running when you ran Speccy.

Do you know how McAfee WebAdvisor got on your computer.

Cables are connected securely.

I have enabled XMP in the bios, one thing I forgot to mention is that I previously lowered the ram speed to 2400 from 3200, apologies for this

For the windows install, I can install it again and follow your instructions. I will get back to you on this

I had a lot of stuff opened, which is the reason why it is eating that much amount of ram.

To answer your questions:

2. I am not really sure on how it got installed, but I have uninstalled it.

Sorry but the above is both pathetic and troublesome to have on a desktop.

Ultra and High Performance are a form of overclocking that is known to cause stability and overheating issues, the setting should only be used for gaming type notebooks that have a discrete GPU that needs the extra power.

That would be a good call but can you take a look at the canned info below first;

Windows should always be installed on either its own drive or on a separate partition on a larger drive, this reduces the amount of free space that is required to be kept available + it makes creating a regular back a whole lot easier.

A 256GB SSD or separate partition on a larger capacity drive should be the minimum capacity allowed for.

Equally as important is being prepared for the need to upgrade to another OS, Windows 10 is nearing its end of life and extended support will cease on October 14th, 2025, when the time comes you will only have to worry about upgrading or clean installing Windows to the C: partition as opposed to needing to reinstall all of your programs and data if they were kept on a separate partition on the same drive.

Windows will also boot up quicker on its own partition as it does not need to install drivers for any third party programs.

I am going to clean install windows again later today and I have a question regarding the sequence of driver installations that I am going to do. After installing the drivers in that order, can I enable the windows updates in the settings? After also installing the graphics card drivers from the gigabyte website, can I also update it and install the latest gpu drivers from adrenalin?

Once you have installed the drivers exactly as list, you are all good to update Windows and Windows Defender.

Under no circumstances should you do this while you are trying to get a stable computer, see another of my canned below;

Once Windows has been installed, you install the necessary drivers for the MB and other hardware and then leave well alone, drivers should not be allowed to auto update and you should never update any driver/s unless the new drivers are intended to resolve a specific issue that you are having, installing new drivers unnecessarily can actually cause you the very issues that any new drivers are intended to resolve and uninstalling the new drivers may not resolve the problem/s that installing the new drivers has caused.

Depending on priority it can take many months before the driver provider releases any fix and depending on the age of the hardware or software concerned they sometimes do not even bother or may have already announced an end of support.
