    My computer's running fast again?

    So, ever since September 2022, I’ve been having issues with watching YouTube videos at a higher quality, opening new tabs, and loading webpages on my pc. Like I used to be able to load a whole video in 1080p, and now I can’t do that anymore. However, dowloading and playing games was fine. Every time I opened up task manager my cpu would spike to 100% then it would instantly go down, so I thought that it might be that. But I still had no idea. Now I download a VPN and things seem to be faster? How does that work? Can someone tell me? And should I still look at changing my cpu or ram maybe?

    g’day and welcome to the forums.

    let’s get your complete PC specs.

    get Speccy from here; Speccy - Download Builds
    in Speccy, click File > Publish Snapshot (hit Yes if prompted to proceed with publish) > Copy to Clipboard > Close.
    now you can paste (Ctrl+V) that link into your next post.
    one component Speccy doesn’t cover is the Power Supply Unit, so also include the make/model of the PSU.

    while we wait for that, try these from an elevated command prompt;
    [ul]
    [li]chkdsk c: /r[/li][li]sfc /scannow[/li][li]dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth[/li][li]dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase[/li][/ul]

    and let’s get the maintenance housekeeping out of the way as well;
    • reboot modem/router/pc
    • delete restore points
    • turn off hibernation (powercfg -h off)
    • empty web browser cache
    • delete system temp files
    • disable unwanted scheduled tasks
    • disable unnecessary startup services
    • disable scheduled defragging
    • TRIM any SSD’s
    • turn off Timeline and Activity History, and all things Microsoft Telemetry based
    • empty recycle bin
    • delete log files and error reports
    • remove old Windows Updates files
    • cleanup software installer and distribution caches
    • delete unwanted programs
    • remove any browser extensions
    • if connecting via wireless, try ethernet
    • pause any online cloud storage synchronising (OneDrive, DropBox)

    CCleaner (free version) or Glary Disk Cleaner or the inbuilt cleanmgr command can do most of those points.
    ShutUp10 by O&O Software can stop a lot of telemetry items.

    other things to try;
    • create another user account and login under that profile
    • check for firmware updates for modem/router

    do a web speed check - go to www.speedtest.net and post the results.

      Did all of the maintenance and my computer is still having trouble loading pages. So not sure if I need to get the ram replaced. For some reason it runs better with a VPN.
      Here’s my specs: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/t...MGBj2KKiSaYuNk

      and here’s my speed check: Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test

      Which actually says that I have no upload speed. How is that possible?

        try the speedtest without the VPN?

        also include the make/model of the power supply?

          from the Speccy report…
          the BIOS firmware is old, maybe they have released upgrades that support your GPU better.
          see if turning off XMP mode in BIOS helps.

          what browser extensions do you use?
          have you tried running the browser in safe/private mode, that is, a clean profile?

            VPN is off during all this. And my psu is a PS 650BSM, 80 plus bronze as well if that matters

              Wait, ok maybe the VPN wasn’t off and that was my bad. Here’s the new speed test: Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test

                  worth trying to either disable all those extensions, rename the Profile folder, or start a new Profile and run Chrome as a clean slate.

                    I’m going to try to make a new chrome profile real quick. Also for the XMP setting, I would have to input the frequency manually. My motherboard only supports up to 7th gen cpus so I’ll looking to upgrade soon

                      It doesn’t really seem like running chrome a clean acct made things faster, nor did disabling the extensions

                        Can you also uninstall java for testing. You can reinstall after if you need it.

                          another quick browser test would be to try Brave or Firefox without installing any extensions and see if they have the issue.

                          when turning off XMP mode, you shouldn’t have to manually change the memory settings.

                            I uninstalled Java, though don’t know what that did. And I also have Firefox on my pc so I pulled it up and still same problem with loading times. Sometimes a page would load relatively quickly vs other times it won’t. Also I don’t think there is an option to turn off XMP mode for my ram because of my old bios
