Reduced Capability, Primarily Video

Using two screens on an old HP p6340f w/ win 7. Plan to upgrade to new hw later in the year but current rig supports my CAD. Screens began to deteriorate, pixelate, then show vertical lines of dots and later go blank completely with ‘no signal’ message. Rebooted several times, sometimes with success, most times got ‘no video signal’ messages on both screens.

What I Did - Reset to a prior saved date. Cleaned all fans, in and out. Checked all connections and cables. Checked ‘Display’ and only one screen shows up. Replaced the video card. Attempted to reset the BIOS by holding the ON button down. Temporarily pulled the battery from the mama board to reset the CMOS(?). Finally reset to factory settings. Tried to download latest appropriate driver for the video card but original ‘no video signal’ and no boot up came back. Could boot up in safe mode.

Current Status/Symptoms - Computer will boot slowly with a single monitor only. Access to internet, hard drive etc. Simple game (Freecell) triggers a lack of acceleration/ video driver warning and reduced fluid movement. Acceleration checked and set properly. Also conflict with accessing ITunes.

Thanks for your time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

So other can assist let get a speccy report.

Do not forget to post the make and model of the PSU if this is a desktop.

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

What GPU do you have in there, the spec is so low that I`m surprised that it will light up even the one screen.
Graphics
Generic Non-PnP Monitor (1920x1200@1Hz)
14MB NVIDIA Standard VGA Graphics Adapter (NVIDIA)

The HX range of PSU were great when they were released twelve years ago, Speccy is showing a couple of high voltage readings which could be the signs of a faulty PSU.
Voltage
VIN0: 1.712 V
MEMORY CONTROLLER: 1.712 V
VIN2: 1.672 V

The RAM is not running at the correct speed, it should be circa 666MHz not the slower speed that it is.

Something badly amiss then as your GPU is only registering 14MB of VRAM as opposed to 2GB.

There are no Windows 7 drivers for the GPU that you have so perhaps that is the issue.

Hmmm…NVIDIA site shows 64bit win 7 driver for the K2000 which I tried to download but triggered the dual ‘no video signal’ messages on my two monitors. Also, this started with the FX1800 which worked for years until all of a sudden crapped out. Maybe a sw bug? can a PSU partially fail?
Again, thanks for your time and patience.

The card mustn`t be classed as Legacy by Nvidea yet then, any chance that you can get the driver version and release date for us, it should tell you this where you downloaded them from.

PSUs weaken over time rather than partially fail, how old is the PSU that you have, if more than seven years old and out of warranty it coul be going out

You are welcome

Tried to download from NVIDIA K2000 driver R440 U4 (441.66), 2019.12.10 but it did the ‘no video signal’ thing. 441.66 shows up in my file when I look under ‘computer’ . Yea, I upgraded the card and PSU to accommodate Solidworks around when I bought the computer, about 2010/11.

Says here that the driver is only for Windows 10.

Create a new folder on the desktop, name it Nvidea drivers.

Download and save to the folder the drivers from here

Download DDU from here

Create a new system restore point then run DDU and uninstall all present Nvidea drivers.

Restart the computer in Safe Mode only (No Networking). **

Install the new GPU drivers that you saved to the folder on your desktop.

Restart the computer, test then post back with an update for us.

** Do a normal restart if the GPU drivers will not install in Safe Mode

In case you are not aware, Nvidea no longer supports your GPU so no more driver updates, see info here

NB: The PSU is seriously old.
